The Prophecy of St. Malachy

Does anyone know anything about this prophecy? Saint Malachy was a pope in the 1100's. He said that there would only be 112 popes until the great tribulation and the end of times. The next pope IS the 112. Why would a pope lie about such a thing? He's supposed to be Peter the Roman and maybe be Italian. Anyone with info.?
