Re: Republican Debate
I thought Romney pulled a clever maneuver. Just my personal observation.
The question was on Perry's Gardasil (HPV) legislation.
When questioned, Romney sided with Perry, in that, he said, "My guess is that Gov. Perry would like to do that a different way. Second time through we each get a, we've each taken a Mulligan or two. And my guess is that's something you would probably do a little differently. Second time he just said he would rather do it through legislation, next time through, and I recognize he wanted badly to provide better healthcare to his kids and to prevent the spread of cancer. I agree with those that said he went about it in the wrong way, but I think his heart was in the right place."
What he did was soften the blow for his own healthcare debacle, but he also closed the door for Perry to take shots at him in the future on that. Pretty clever.
One thing that hurt Romney, IMO, was coming at Perry's job growth success in Texas to defend his own state. He said that Texas had a better business environment than Massachusetts. He stated it was because Texas doesn't have an income tax, strong union presence and it is an oil and gas industry.
I can only imagine people were thinking it would be nice if the rest of the country had those advantages. If anyone shot themselves in the foot, Romney did it here.
And even though I don't think Gingrich stands a chance, he is absolutely the most brilliant man on the stage and in the room.
