I also wonder if the UPCI position on secret fanternties was some kind of attempt to hedge against a feeling the the early 20th century Apostolics were wierd zealots etc?
All they needed was to be tied to secret organizaitions.
After a half dozen decades, who can really say for sure what the motive was?
