I think it's important to know that faith isn't magic to be used at our discretion. Faith is what is necessary to believe the unction of the Spirit when God wants to do something. Many men think of faith as something that gets God moving. No...faith gets us moving. I don't have the faith to heal people. But I pray I have the faith to lay hands on a person when the Spirit speaks and indicates that God desires to heal them.
But I think you're right in your overall premise. I don't think we can be 100% sure of our ultimate salvation.
