I have a friend that is Mayor in a smaller town than Palin governed and he has to deal with a myriad of issues. I have several friends on City Council in two adjoining towns. They were having some real big time issues and one of my friends brought her Council lawyer to the meeting in the other town because they were to poor to hire one. The woman did it as a favor.
She called and discussed all the legal ramifications they had to follow to get things done correctly and for the people. Lots of crooked dealings going on. The legal issues were so involved. They had to study them out and be confirmed by a lawyer to proceed. They had to be instructed on how to conduct themselves at the City Counsel meeting in order to resolve the issues and get the current Mayor voted out. He was a crook and so were the policemen he hired. No background checks and he was refusing to allow it. Just a lot of stuff.
So, the article is right - you get smart real quick and you are working with actual people, governance. It doesn't matter how big or small. You're doing it. I've seen this take place just recently in my area.
The size and scope does matter in my opinion. I know pastors who haveto deal with a myriad of issues and lawyers etc...
Governing a town of 5,000 people is night and day from governing a town like Chicago.
