It seems as though there may be even more than just two sides involved here. From what you describe, I see a side that is far removed from my own thinking. And I have described something that is certainly not characteristic of your beliefs. So, perhaps in "refuting" either of our positions it might be helpful if we did not bring in the other unrelated scenarios.
The believers are instructed to "work out your own salvation with fear and trembling..." I guess that there will always be those who simply work things out as however they want.
