Just as an honorary doctorate wouldn't qualify someone to be a brain surgeon, neither would an honorary degree on its own qualify someone to be on the scholastic committee that leads an manuscript translation.

Looks like Pentecost isn't the only group struggling with this issue/phenom. Quite big in Christian Fundie circles too:

So you can't name a person granted an honorary MD degree. Even entering this country, they have to re-do their internships, residency and take board exams. I have known catholic Nuns that had actual doctorates. I have never met one that was an MD. Some were nursing or science, education doctorates. There are many very strong schools that do not grant Honorary degrees.

An MD is not an Honorary Degree, no. But the Medical Field awards honorary degrees quite regularly. And most "strong schools" have a privilege of awarding honorary degrees each year. These would include Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Cambridge, Oxford, etc...

ARETHA FRANKLIN
We know royalty when we see it, and you are, without question, the Queen of Soul. A natural woman, you have been singing your whole life, learning the grace of gospel from family and faith community, tuning it with your own sometimes painful, often joyful, experiences, and creating a signature style that transcends any one musical genre. You have sung the nation’s hopes at presidential inaugurations, and shared your gifts with generations of music lovers. From gospel to pop, from blues to hip-hop, your voice expresses our feelings. With the greatest R-E-S-P-E-C-T, we name you DOCTOR OF MUSIC.

Dr. Queen of Soul!
Well deserved. Music is a performing art.

I would assume that all that were granted from Yale this year are well-deserved.

Music is a performing art - true.

Music is not only a performing art - true.

Music has concentrations of both arts and science. The genius behind some of the world's best teachers and composers is mind-blowing. Often it takes 25+years of study to attain the knowledge many of these have.

That was an issue at one school. Someone got an honorary Doctorate for a job they planned to do.
ASU was in trouble for not giving Obama a doctorate.

Notre Dame is Catholic and who are against abortion.

"The degree praises Obama as an agent of the 'global common good.' The fact
that Obama promotes abortion around the world makes him the adversary - not
the champion - of the 'global common good.'
Here Obama gets a degree coupled with flattery.

Kind of like the Nobel Peace Prize!

That is the science part. Some can write and can't sing. My daughter has written music,. My son had some written for his small group they performed with the first time at Carnegie hall when he was a teen.
