Re: Birth Order

I am the oldest of 5. Also the oldest grandchild on my mother's side of the family. My sister didn't come along until I was 3 years old. Then I was 5 when we added my brother, 6 when we added my second brother and 7 1/2 when my youngest sister came along. For the first 5 years, my sister and I were the only grandchildren.

My situation is a little bit different tho in that I have aunts and uncle who are only 10, 11 and 12 years older than me. And because we lived next door to my grandparents, and I was always "Grandma's baby girl", I almost feel like I could have been the baby of my grandparents family. Know what I mean?

I have done daycare in my home for the last 24 years. I chose to do that because it was important to us from the very beginning that I stay at home to raise our children. We did not want someone else raising our kids. Just a personal thing, I guess. OR it could be because my dad was adamant about my mom NEVER working - he wanted to be the provider and he wanted her to be home to raise the kids. I guess you live what you learned

Re: Birth Order

I'm the oldest.

I've worked a lot of customer service. But, I'm a teacher. Plain and simple. I'm currently in school so I can teach and get paid for it too.

I was a stay at home mom from the time my oldest was born until I went back to school when he was 8.

Since then, I've been in school and worked a variety of jobs on campus (tutor, library assistant) and customer service work (fast food, Walmart for awhile).

When I graduate, I'll teach highschool history. Unless I go directly into a graduate program and work an internship on a college campus instead. My eventual goal is to teach at a college level. It's entirely likely I'll end up with a PhD in history, and at least a few degrees in math as well. Math is the love of my life and teaching it makes me very, very happy. It'd take me a year and a half longer to get a BS in math than it will take me to get a BA in history though. I have to support these kids, and fast food isn't cutting it.

Re: Birth Order

I'm the oldest of 7, but was only raised with my oldest brother. The other five lived with my dad and his wife.

My mom demanded a lot more out of me than my brother, who is just 2 1/2 yrs younger than I. And today, our lives show how detrimental that was to him.

I'm a nurse, but have worked since I was 15, even though I didn't get my degree until last year. However, my brother, although he owns his own construction company (and has for about 10 years) constantly struggles with money and only lived on his own (albeit with the help of his in-laws) while married for about 7 years.

I've lived on my own for over 15 years, but when I lived at home as an adult, I paid rent and bought my own food and supplies. My brother never did that. Still doesn't...LOL!

My little brother is 18 years old, and my niece is 16. It looks funny when you see her calling him uncle.

my dad had 3 nieces when he was born. And 2 more born the same year as him. You're right. It was funny when we used to hear them calling him uncle (my dad is deceased ) But those were on my dad's side of the family. On his side, there are over 70 grandkids, 90+ great grandkids and I've lost count of how many great-greats. I fall towards the end of the 70 grands (which makes sense since my dad was the youngest of 9 kids)

My ex-husband has a niece older than him and a nephew a couple months younger.

My youngest brother was 5 when my son was born. He cried when we told him he was an uncle. He said he wasn't old enough. LOL!

This is one reason we never used "uncle" or "aunt" when talking to our uncles and aunts. Just used their first names.
