My Son Made Me Proud Today

My youngest son has had a rough year. He really messed up this past fall, his second year at College. It really started the second semester of his first year of college. His grades had dropped to the point he lost a $5000 year scholarship and was close to losing another $3300 one.

Then this past fall he continued to struggle (working too much, playing too much, and not studying enough in my opinion). He had always found High School easy but suddenly he was having trouble making good grades.

He pulled out of school last fall towards the end of the semester and because of the loss of scholarships decided to attend College at the state University ten minutes from our house. Then in January he decided to take this semester off to work hard and make enough moneyto pay off his car, etc so he would have less pressure next fall.

All has been going according to plan until recently. He has been working three jobs during this time and one of them is doing Valet parking at a restaurant. It is frequented by a lot of wealthy successful people who love him. He has regulars that know him by name, etc.

One of them is one of the most successful Real Estate agents in our area for upscale multi million dollar homes. Not long ago he was talking with my son who expressed that real estate was one of his interests. He told my son to come interview for an administrative assistant position at his firm and that he would train him to be an agent for his company.

When my son told this to several other real estate people he knows they were very impressed and said it sounded like a great opportunity.

My son had his interview last Saturday with whoever the owner has do that sort of thing. They said they were interviewing several people and would call him Monday.

My son had gotten angry with me at first when I tempered my enthusiasm for this opportunity by saying it sounded like a full time job that would not allow him to finish college and if that was the case I feared he would never finishs and I really think it is something he needs to do.

However my son just called me and told me that they did indeed call and offer him the position and were going to pay for his real estate license, etc but that he told them he has t hought about it and he believes he needs to finish college first, that he would love to talk to them once he has that under his belt. The man was disappointed but I believe he understands.

I am proud of my son for delaying immediate gratification. I know that he saw dollar signs in his eyes with this opportunity but I think he made the best decision for the long run.

I think the college degree is important because it represents a disciplined course of study not only in a field you are interested in (businesss in this case) but it gives you a base of knowledge in history, geography, literature, etc that most people will not get on their own. I think it makes for a richer life.

And it helps you get past the salary ceiling in the corp world.....
