This was intended to forever link a people, or group of decedents, to their religion or cultural tradition. It's just a cultural thing. A more recent example would be found in Europe; many British people believed and taught Anglo-Israelism because it would nationally connect them with their Christian religious heritage, though an Anglo connection with Israel is debatable.
Also the biblical genealogies contain acknowledged gaps. A few of them immediately in the Bible don't agree. It is customary to say that "someone begat someone else"...though they are truly grandfather or even perhaps great grandfather.

In doing my own genealogy I find that the daughter of James the Just is alleged to have married into the families of Brythonic and Welsh nobility. So one branch of my tree on ancestry.com actually purpots to pick up with James the brother of Jesus and traces my lineage along Luke's account to Adam.
And the interesting thing is: according to some mathetical computer models 85 - 90% of people in North America with any European ancestry at all have the same connection.
I can't really stake my whole life and well being on the veracity of this "factoid." But whenever I'm down it does kind of get me to lift my head up a bit when I think that I may be descended from Kings, Psalmists, prophets and saints and that I should try and act like it.
I think one use for the biblical genealogies was to provoke just this kind of thinking.

Perhaps I am too much of a fundalmentalist, that being said, I fall under the persuasion that the whole earth was flooded.

Re: Genesis Flood Local Or Global ?
To be honest there is alot to consider in looking closer at some of these things.
We do know that all that weren't in the ark did perish.

About that ark... no wooden vessel of 300 feet or more has ever been successfully built. Ever.
There was a challenge of some sort by a group of unbelievers for someone to build a recreation of the ark and set it a float in the open seas. No one has even tried.
There is a church in Maryland that started to build an all wooden building - but the building inspectors had to step in and demand that they conform to modern building standards and material if they wanted to build the thing. It turns out you can't even build a free standing wooden building 300 feet long made entirely of wood.
So if the ark of Genesis was to be understood in literal terms we have not only ask, " How could it have possibly stayed afloat?" but, we have to ask, " How could it have possibly stood on the ground for 120 years?"

Well if you are going to base your reasoning that wood should not have been preserved, then maybe you should consider the age of those patriarchs before the flood. How could anyone possibly survive 969 years as Methuselah did? Of course, I realize that you probably do not even believe that they lived beyond 900 years; or do you?

It's not the preservation properties of wood that makes it unsuitable for these purposes - it's the flexibility.
Many types of wood are actually idea for some long term uses. The ceiling joists in the chapel at Oxford University were recently replaced - more than 500 years after being installed. The architect had in fact planted a grove of oak trees for future use as timbers for the replacements anticipating that his building would last that long - and with fresh joists, even longer.
The problem with the "300 Foot Barrier" in wooden ships is that the combined length of the wood flexes too much to allow tight seals in the planking. A series of 300 foot long steamships were built a little over 100 years ago - with steel fastenings for strength.
But when the ships made way through the water the would literally undulate and people on the decks could look over the sides and watch as gaps in the planking moved continuously from bow to stern. They had to run the steam powered pumps full time just to stay afloat.
I guess wind shears have a similar effect on wooden buildings. Wood is an excellent material - and if you treat it with... say pitch, it will last for a very long time. But for expansive spans like 300 foot ship hulls you need something more rigid like steel.

Not sure that is true, there are tobacco barns here in MD that are at least that large and the Bellview-Biltmore Hotel is an 820,000 square foot all wood building.
