Inheritance For Your Children

Proverbs 13:22

A good man leaveth an inheritance to his children's children: and the wealth of the sinner is laid up for the just.

Is it important to leave a monetary inheritance to your children?

This is not about what is most important - we all know passing on the faith is the primary thing.

Re: Inheritance For Your Children

I don't know about this, Steve. I've always felt like our parents didn't OWE us an inheritance at all. They raised us, fed us, clothed us, sheltered us and took care of us until we were old enough to support ourselves. At this point in life, I feel more like I owe to my mom than that she owes to me (she is the only parents either of us have left now). I would give her anything I own. But I certainly would never EXPECT her to give to me.

On the other hand, I will say this: when Walt's dad died, he had bought a considerable amount of life insurance which all 4 kids split evenly. That money has been a very, very big blessing for us. But did he OWE that to us? No. Are we grateful? Absolutely!

I feel it will be a blessing to leave an inheritance to my children. To me it is not a matter of oweing it to them or that they deserve it necessarily but a joy to share the fruits of generational blessings! Show them the money!

Re: Inheritance For Your Children

My parents worked hard for their money and I hope they enjoy it or use it to provide excellent care for themselves in their waning years. They provided for me when I was not able to provide for myself, they helped me get a college education, and gave me a great start in life.

Re: Inheritance For Your Children

If I have children, they will receive an early inheritance in the form of a B.S. or B.A. If I have only one child, I'd offer a Masters'.

Look in history how the Jewish folks have treated inheritence.

If you teach your children to respect.

They will value what is left behind.

Re: Inheritance For Your Children

Good posts. I always thought it would be the right thing to do - if God enables it of course. I was surprised to discover some think it is of little value.

Certainly the children need to learn good stewardship and respect anyway - so hopefully they will know not to blow it like the prodigal of scripture.

Yes indeed. There is no debt to be paid. It is a blessing bestowed on the children. I have spoken to some who think it is better to give your assets to the church or a ministry... (and I too don't think those should be excluded.)
