I disagree with you and so does our current tax system.
If it was up to me, there would be no income tax in the first place. But an income tax based on what you earn is fair.
Well, I disagree with you AND our current tax system.

You want higher tax revenues MikeinAWE? Why don't you look at what has been proven to be the best way to increase revenues for the government: C-U-T-T-I-N-G T-A-X-E-S. Reagan did it along with cuts in spending and the greatest tax revenues were realized as a result because the economy grew and it saw the longest period of growth in peacetime history.
I am sorry it doesn't upset you that BO wants to raise taxes during an economic downturn. I am sorry it doesn't upset you that BO wants to punish success and achievement. I am sorry it doesn't bother you that taxing the wealthy only leads to hurting the middle and lower classes. But I don't expect you to be upset. It won't affect you, will it Mike?
You and you're silly, old, tired trickle down economic talk, DB.
By the way, why do you feel the need to call posters by silly names like "MikeinAWE"? Isn't that a tad childish?

It IS based on what you earn. The one who makes $10,000/wk is paying a LOT more than the person making a few hundred per week--but the equivalent percentage of his income just the same.
Are you for the Fair Tax?

It is fair for the tax rate to increase as the amount of money you make increase.
You're paying your taxes to a government, without which, you could not earn what you earn in the firs place (strictly politically speaking here.)
So why would it be unfair to assist your government?
Say there are three siblings who have an elderly grandpa.
Two siblings bring in about 60k annually. However 1 sibling brings in about 200k annually.
Would it be a burden for the wealthier sibling to contribute more towards the care and necessities of the parent?
Would it be fair?
Wouldn't it be expected?
Wouldn't it be duty?

The Fair Tax is the way to go. I wish we had politicians on either side of the aisle with the guts to implement it. It's the only true "fair" way to distribute the tax burden in this country.

For every 1 Joe the Plumber who actually has to "work hard" for his 250k, if and when he gets to that point, there are 20 fat cats who live off of "the fat of the land", who's idea of "hard work" happens in some executive office in Manhattan or LA.
Joe the Plumber is a straw man-- the real issue is that the WEALTHY who are able to afford more taxes should pay more taxes.
That's not a grand departure from our American government, is not socialism as I know it, but is fair and realistic.
Sorry 1399, you have it backwards. There are far more Joe Plumbers than there are "fat cats" in Manhattan. Small business owners are the backbone of our economy. They provide at least 2/3 of the jobs in America, maybe more.
And words like "fair", "fair share", "spread the wealth" are straight out of the socialist handbook. It is socialism no matter how you slice it.
And by what logic is the idea that those who could afford more taxes should pay more taxes?
What if the government decides that you could afford a Harley Davidson tattoo across your back therefore you should pay for it? That's not realistic in my book, and neither is forcing people to pay more taxes simply because they can.
Its an easy assessment to make when the burden isn't going to be placed on your back.
Somehow I'm afraid the dirty little secret is that the $250,000 tax payer is a smokescreen for the fact that we all will be paying more eventually.
