I had an epiphany today about preaching. I believe it is indeed commentary on the established word of God. The reason we have so many different types of churches today is because there are different opinions and commentary about what certain scriptures are trying to say.
I can get excited and jump for joy with some preaching, but once my feet land on the ground I better be walking straight because the word that I heard lines up with scripture.
Were the Bereans in Acts 17:11 wrong for checking on what Paul preached? Should they have just trusted Paul and "lined up" in submission without questioning anything?
No. We are suppose to study to show ourselves approved. But at some point either you trust your Pastor (preacher) or you don't. Its not submitting if you agree. But it should, of course, not violate the scripture. But it may rub standards, culture and traditions the wrong way.

No. Preaching is to reprove, rebuke and exhort with all long suffereing and doctrine. I guess I just do not like preaching, compared to a commentary.
So you just don't like the word commentary applied to preaching by a preacher?
Sorry, you already answered this Brother Rutledge.

I love that phrase and agree wholeheartedly!
Also, we have to walk straight because we are doers of the Word, not hearers only.

As we expound the Word of God (Scriptures), we explain the Word (God's written revelation to humankind). As long as what we say agrees with the written word, we are presenting the Word of God.

If the preacher reads from the Word we usually know this, his "preaching" is commentary or his thoughts on the scriptures.
How do we make sure his "commentary" lines up with the Word of God? During or after?
We are to judge all things by the written Word.
We are only to follow our leadership as they follow Christ.
When they leave the written Word we have no obligation to obey them or follow their advice or emulate their lifestyle.
