Well Stephen Hoover this is turning into one of the longest threads I have ever initiated. I would hate to have a chilling effect on the conversation or alternatively get more involved in the thread than I have time for right now.
It is fair to say I have mixed emotions and various posts have done a fine job expressing some of my thoughts. Other ideas haven't been fullly explored yet as far as I can tell...
1. The images that flash in my mind are a mixture of scenes from "The Village" where those growing up therein had no idea of outside life and stories of the Holacast in which children were ripped from their mother's arms in what would have had to be as emotionally terrifying as one can imagine.
2. Alternatively, I am also reminded of the cult that drank the koolaid when they were scrutinized from outside sources.
3. Consequently, I am not convinced that Texas should have rushed in there full blazes without a more coesive plan in place first.
4. For goodness sake, Texas has been sending welfare payments to many of these mothers for a long time. Surely they could have shut off the money or tied it to some programing designed to protect the kids and verify their well being instead of SUDDENLY attempting to take their kids away
FOREVER which is what termination of parental rights does.
5. I see parental rights being trampled as Texas seemingly throws spagetti against the wall to see what sticks in judging the many by the few cases they might be able to prove.
6. Individual mothers (some who knew nothing else) should not be held responsible for the underage marriages that took place unless it was their own children. This is ludicrous!
7. And I would pray for grace to those mothers who could legitimately be charged with "failure to protect." Were they not themselves victims? Shouldn't the state of Texas attempt to reabilitate these parents instead of automatically speaking of terminating their rights?
8. Furthermore, I can't imagine that anyone is so comfortable that they would have no problem with CPS asking their children questions about their parenting skills outside their presence knowing those asking the questions are bound and determined to find abuse lest they look like idiots for how they have already handled things.
9. What ideas are being implanted as this is going on on such a large scale basis to a group of children all the more traumatized because they have no experience with the outside world?
10. And yes, I understand this is about sex abuse and not specifically religious freedom. HOWEVER, the reality of these protective proceedings happening to a
group of people based on so little information (which initially would have implicated only two sets of parents is hard to imagine).
11. I leave you with this thought expressed about how the German people gave their rights up bit by bit as the Nazis came to power.
"First they came for the Jews, and I didn't speak out - because I was not a Jew. Then they came for the Communists, and I did not speak out -because I was not a Communist. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out -because I was not a trade unionist. Then they came for me and there was no one left to speak for me!" -Pastor Niemoller
So carry on.... I have about used up my quota of time for this week!
