Anyone watching the Figure Skating Championship?!

It's Live coverage...the team of Inoue/Baldwin had just finished their program when Baldwin got down on his knees on the ice and proposed marriage.

She accepted with tears...very sweet.

Seriously though, I don't know why they still call it 'Figure Skating' when it really isn't.

Back in the day, the skaters used to have to do the 'school figures', commonly known as the 'figure eight'.

I can remember seeing the judges get down on the ice with a ruler measuring to see how far outside/inside the 'figure eight' the skater was.

Now it's performance based...my mom still loves it, but to me it's just not the same competition.

they still do that, but they call it a different name. Different competition. I have thought the same thing though, why call it figure skating?

Compulsory figures, in which skaters use their blades to draw circles, figure 8s, and similar shapes in ice, and are judged on the accuracy and clarity of the figures and the cleanness and exact placement of the various turns on the circles. Figures were formerly included as a component of singles competitions but were eliminated from those events in 1990. Today figures are rarely taught or performed. The United States was the last country to retain a separate test and competitive structure for compulsory figures, but the last national-level figures championship was held in 1999.

I guess they don't do it anymore....I remember watching them at the olympics

I was in the kitchen but happened to catch that clip where he proposed.

She was very reserved! Much more so than I would have been, but she's Asian after all.
