Growing Goatees with Atlanta Bishop

Hey AB, maybe you can give some of us UPCers tips on how to grow a well trimmed and nice looking goatee. I was thinking maybe Bro Epley can offer some tips too and then we can send this on to the Reckart clan

  1. There is One God. This one God reveals Himself distinctly as Father, Son and Holy Ghost.
  2. The Son is God himself in a human form or "God manifested in the flesh" (1Tim 3:16)
  3. Every sinner must repent of their sins.
  4. That Jesus name baptism is the only biblical mode of water baptism.
  5. That the Holy Ghost is for today and is received by faith with the initial evidence of speaking in tongues.
  6. The saint will go on to strive to live a holy life, pleasing to God.

Thought you might find this interesting..

History of goatees
Could Satan have had the first?

Goatees are so named because they resemble the beard of a billy goat.

So says John Sulak, who wrote “A Brief History of the Goatee” for the September 1996 edition of Request Line, the online sibling of Request magazine. The full article is at www.requestline.com/pop/feature/1996/09/goatee/

His research revealed:

• The first goatee may have been worn by Satan. The devil's image is based on Pan, the ancient Greek half-man, half-goat deity. When early Christians began abolishing pagan religions and their gods, they needed someone to play the heavy. They chose Pan, a lover of music, dancing and sex. His flute was replaced by a pitchfork and he was transformed from the god of woods and pastures to the ruler of hell.

• In the 17th century, goatees got some respect thanks to Flemish painter Sir Anthony Van Dyck (also spelled Van Dyke). He did a series of portraits of men wearing the goatee variation now known as the Van Dyke.

• During the last days of the French Empire in the mid-19th century, the “imperial” was worn by Napoleon III. Wax or pomade was used to bring chin whiskers to a sharp point.

• In America, imperials became popular with officers on both sides of the Civil War. The look remained in vogue after the war, thanks in part to Buffalo Bill Cody, who toured the country with his Wild West Show.

• In late 19th-century Paris, poets, painters, intellectuals and dropouts — collectively known as bohemians — lived together in poverty and rebellion. For them, the goatee was a symbol of their free-spirited nature.

• By the 1940s, America had its own bohemians, but trendy haircuts weren't their thing. After World War II, the stereotypical “beatnik” look — goatee and black beret — was copied from jazz musician Dizzy Gillespie.

• From 1959 to 1963, the television show Dobie Gillis brought a goateed man by the name of Maynard G. Krebs into millions of American living rooms. Bob Denver (who later was a castaway on Gilligan's Island)played the role of Maynard, a likable guy who dressed like a bum and listened to jazz.

• By 1969 the goatee cropped up regularly on the popular cartoon Scooby-Doo. Shaggy, the beatnik among the teen-age sleuths, sported a long, thin goatee.

For twentysome years, the goatee disappeared, Mr. Sulak writes. “Only a person who was completely cut off from popular culture would grow such a beard,” he writes.

Not so in the '90s. High profile personalities with goatees include TV's Anthony Edwards (ER), Jeffrey Samms (Cupid) and Rocky Carroll (Chicago Hope); film actors Ben Affleck (Shakespeare In Love) and Will Smith (Enemy of the State); director Spike Lee, and a pretty fair baseball player named Mark McGwire.

I find this very suspect. Pan was a half goat/half man being. He had the lower body of a goat and the torso of a man, a mans face and head with horns. In some of the pictures I see he has a full beard and mustache, not a goatee. To then equate the bible Satan to Greek mythology and then assert "the first goatee may have been worn by Satan" seems really absurd. BTW even if this were true does that make having a goatee wrong? Satan "may" have been the first musician too....

PAN was the god of shepherds and flocks, of mountain wilds, hunting and rustic music. He wandered the hills and mountains of Arkadia playing his pan-pipes and chasing Nymphs. His unseen presence aroused feelings of panic in men passing through the remote, lonely places of the wilds.
The god was a lover of nymphs, who commonly fled from his advances. Syrinx ran and was transformed into a clump of reeds, out of which the god crafted his famous pan-pipes. Pitys escaped and was turned into a mountain fir, the god's sacred tree. Ekho spurned his advances and fading away left behind only her voice to repeat forever the mountain cries of the god.

Pan was depicted as a man with the horns, legs and tail of a goat, and with thick beard, snub nose and pointed ears. He was often appears in the retinue of Dionysos alongside the other rustic gods. Greeks in the classical age associated his name with the word pan meaning "all". However, it true origin lies in an old Arkadian word for rustic.

For some reason I always thought this was a new trend associated with the Dick Van Dyke family lol...oh well

Definitely satanic...wax? Sharp point? Like in a witches hat?

Here is where the fallacy some have of the "hippie movement, stand against beards" falls...it "might" be a plausible point AT the time, but this does not mean even then and especially in later years that facial hair is ONLY associated with such movements

AB is a beatnik? HAHAHAHAHA

Yup...all men who have facial hair are bums lol...BTW I passed by a Jew today on his way to get a brew...had a full beard and the yarmulke on

I loved that when I was a kid

I think those who grow van dykes or goatees are the lukewarm spoken about in scripture.

Uh, never mind, just remembered I had cut my beard back to a van dyke.

Shoot, I almost believed a heresy.

I got a little over zealous last week with my new beard trimmer. Ended up with only a mustache left.

I started over Saturday.....I am one scruffy looking mess at the moment.

Gonna trim it up this weekend.

A little advice on beard trimmers.....use the gaurd set on highest...you can always set it lower......but if you start off on lowest....well you get the picture.

Ask more questions than that, Bro Joe.

What does he mean "the church handed" him the razor? The pastor? Some meddling saint? His own conscience?

And was the music "better" or "worse" with the shave? Was the musician "better" or "worse?"

Meddling minds want details.
