Exclamation The new USS New York (LPD-21)

Here SHE is, The USS New York (LPD 21), made from the World Trade Center!

It was built with 24 tons of scrap steel from the WorldTrade Center.

It is the fifth in a new class of warship - designed for missions that include special operations against terrorists. It will carry a crew of 360 sailors and 700 combat-ready Marines to be delivered ashore by helicopters and assault craft.

Steel from the World Trade Center was melted down in a foundry in Amite, LA to cast the ship's bow section. When it was poured into the molds on Sept. 9, 2003 , "those big rough steelworkers treated it with total reverence," recalled Navy Capt. Kevin Wensing, who was there. "It was a spiritual moment for everybody there."

Junior Chavers, foundry operations manager, said that when the trade center steel first arrived, he touched it with his hand and the "hair on my neck stood up." "It had a big meaning to it for all of us," he said. "They knocked us down. They can't keep us down. We're going to be back."

The ship's motto? "Never Forget."

Actually, no.

Hugh Rodham, the wealthy textile manufacturer originally from Chicago has a famous daughter.

Rear Admiral Hugh Rodman (no relation to Dennis or Hillary) who so famously broke his flag in defiance of the German Kaiser before leading the A.E.F. to Europe in 1917, was a different individual.

Hillary's dad died in New York City at the age of 82 in 1993. That means he would have to have been just 6 years old when Black Jack and the doughboys sailed off to Flanders Fields.

Below we see "Sir" Hugh (newly minted knight by King George) and some of his Yankee mates. Admiral Sir Hugh (not Hillary's pater) is circled in the pic.

I sailed the high seas on 3 US Navy ships.
LST Fairfax County
Distroyer Richard E. Byrd
LKA Charleston

Alas, the last 2 have been decomissioned. Not sure about the first.

I spent many a fun hour making Marines puke their guts up on the Charleston! LOL! what fun! Marines are tuff hombres on land, but put them on the deck of a ship and it is another ballgame all together!
