So he was setting out some new tree stands. He put one up, stood back to make sure it was level and stepped backwards RIGHT INTO A YELLOW JACKET NEST!!! He got stung at least 15-20 times. He said he was not allergic to bees before but with that many stings, his throat immediately started to swell closed. Luckily he had some antihistamines in his car that he took right away.

This same doc was in the paper last year because he bagged a HUGE bear on his property!! It was impressive!!
ONLY 20 deer per acre????? And he didn't think that was a lot?????? LOL!

Me thinks he doesn't know how small an acre is. If you are aware of the size of an acre of land, imagine 20 deer on it. I can't imagine 50 deer on one acre finding enough to eat!!!

that's why they have to be thinned out. He applied for and got 20 doe permits for his property. Last year he and his buddies took out 17 does, plus the bucks (he didn't say how many)

Hmmmph. Thats nothing. Year before last I took out 12 deer during gun and muzzleloader season by myself. Thats not counting the deer others in my group took. Tell him to get with the program or let me come help him.

I am not much of a big game hunter....arrowed a Coues whitetail a few years ago and bloodtrailed him for hours ...never found him.
Pretty much gave up bow hunting soon after that. I still love to quail, dove and duck hunt, do a little squirrel and rabbit hunting here and there.

Saw a nice 6x6 elk in the back of a pickup this morning, guy got him with a bow at 42 yards up near Big Lake here in AZ.

When the leaves begin to turn and the nights get cool all serious hunters get serious about hunting!!!

At 75 my Dad went to Idaho and took his last bull elk. By himself! No one could go with him at the time so he packed it out by himself over a two day period. No vehicles allowed where we hunt. Don't ever let it be said preachers can't be "tough"! He will be 82 his birthday and we will be hunting in October at 9000 feet in Utah with some of his great-grandsons.

Heres my story...

Saturday, Sept. 22nd, 2007

The alarm went off at 5am but having just got to bed at 3am (youth event!), I rolled over, turned it off saying "not today" and went back to sleep.

When I finally did get up I quickly got the fever...it was a gorgeous day! I decided to go out for a late afternoon/evening hunt by myself. My husband was working and my cousin couldn't make it so after letting a couple people know where I would be, off I went.

By 3:30pm I was perched in a tree in my alternate spot. My primary spot is deep in the woods and near a dense cedar swamp while the alternate spot is close to a road and a corn field. Definitely a better choice when hunting alone until dark.

It was a gorgeous afternoon. The chipmunks and squirrels were busy. I had some peanuts with me and tossed one to the chipmunk below my stand that kept hanging around as if I was somehow fascinating! He ran at first but then returned to search out what had hit the ground near him.

Slowly the sun descended. I had hoped maybe to see some turkeys as well but they were no where to be seen. Only the sandhill crains called from the cornfield.

The setting sun illuminated the side of the hill on the edge of the cornfield. From scouting the area I knew that a well used deer trail ran along the length of this hillside. It was from this trail that I expected deer to appear.

6:20pm - A doe appears on the northeast end of the hillside, following the trail as I had expected. Whether she would turn my way or not and come into range remained to be seen. Several smaller trails turned off this main trail and went in various directions. A couple of them passed within bow range of my stand and I was hoping she would choose one of them.

She didn't. She chose to turn and go through the brush where I didn't believe a trail existed. But, nonetheless, she was heading in my general direction and I was ready. As I watched, I realized she wasn't a huge doe but she was all alone. She turned yet again and was heading straight for me. I decided to take her if she came in range. As she got closer a chipmunk ran in front of her startling her. She jumped back and turned to go back the way she came but then she stopped.

My heart was pounding as she started heading my way once again. She came into range at 20 yards and by her general direction wasn't going to get any closer. As she stepped behind a tree I drew. In between trees she stopped on her own and I let fly. She ran a few FEET, not yards, and stopped. I was puzzled. Had I missed? I could only see the top of her head in the brush. I looked away briefly as I nocked another arrow and when I turned back all I saw was ears slowly descending into the brush. She had laid down! I was ecstatic!

So...now what do I do? Shes real close to where I shot her. If I go recover my arrow, I could jump her. But then again, she might be dead. Thoughts raced through my mind and my heart was still pounding.

I waited 15 minutes. I watched the brush. Nothing.

Slowly I creeped down my ladder stand and slowly walked up to where I had shot her. I immediately found my bloody arrow. As I was examining it, I also noticed some stomach contents but the blood was good and I felt confident. About that time, she jumped up not even 10 feet away. She went a few feet, stopped and down she went again, vanishing in the thick brush.

I knew she was hit good but didn't want to risk pushing her again so I slowly backed away. I went back to my stand and called for help. It was now 7pm.

Help was about an hour away so that would give her some time. As I waited for help, I called another cousin, an avid bowhunter, and asked advice. He adviced waiting at least two hours and suggested I pack up and try to sneak out of there.

So thats what I did. I snuck back to my truck and waited for help to arrive. When it did arrive, we still had an hour to go so we went into town and got a bite to eat.

At 9pm we returned with lights in hand. We went back to where my arrow was found and began walking in the direction I saw her last. We found blood quickly but then lost it in the brush. My husband turned to the left but that wasn't the way I saw her go so I continued the way I believed to be right. Soon I picked up the blood trail again. My cousin caught up to me and we found lots of blood. I moved forward a few more feet and there she was, down but still alive. She wasn't 30 yards from the spot where I shot her but the dense brush of thorn bushes and blackberry brush made it rough going.

She wasn't going anywhere but nonetheless we speeded up the process and headed out of there. It was 10pm.

The monkey is officially off my back and my confidence is restored. No, she wasn't a big doe. But shes a trophy in my eyes and my first success with a bow. The memories of deer shot and not recovered haunted me but this memory, of a successful hunt with a successful recovery, will not soon be forgotten.

I am one happy bowhunter today!

(Pics will be coming...film has to be developed)
