You are correct however many UPC and other OTP folks did take offense as they are usually looking to take offense and find it.
Anybody who read the book with an open mind would realize he was not attacking "people" but erroneous concepts and ideas.
I remember talking on the phone to a UPC pastor friend of mine from Bible College that I had not spoke to for years not long after that book came out. We had been having a great conversation until that book came up and his whole demeanor changed. He was livid. He had taken great offense at it. I remember being very surprised then I remembered how reactionary most UPC folks are to their house of cards being challenged. You start tugging at one of those cards and they see the whole house shaking.
When I first read that book I remember wishing I had the money to buy one and mail it to every licensed UPC preacher. For most it would have just been a source of more fiery hold the fort preaching but for a few it would have been confirmation of what they know in their mind, hearts, and souls.
