So I wouldn’t be surprised if he told The evangelist some peoples issues. Especially when it was common for people to say that God told them something when in reality they received info from another person. The justification for saying “God told me” was that God must have wanted them to know or they would have never received the information.
Billy Cole mentioned this during one of his messages at BOTT in the 90s. He warned against people claiming God told them something when it wasn't God who told them.

There's too many self-appointed people running around claiming they're some Prophet or Prophetess, etc. My rule of thumb is if they have a website, social media page or business card identifying themselves as "Prophet" Joe Smith or "Prophetess" Josephina Smith ... I steer clear.

Like, prophecy and vocal gifts accurate 50% of the time... until you learn how to be ...more accurate? Saying that out loud... leaves a bad taste.
I believe the "learning" comes through complete dedication to prayer and by exercising the gift. The more dedicated you are in prayer, the easier it will be to hear the voice of God. And the more you exercise and use the gift, the easier it will become.

Yes! If there’s doubt then stating “God said” is not acceptable.

So it’s common. Sad.

The way its listed by Paul, the gifts are to be used in a setting where they can be judged by those present. A setting like this would allow a believer to be "trained" so he can walk more confidently in his gifting or the Spirit.

Prophecy in the church age is NOT the same as it was in the OT.

There has to be room to grow and develop in a safe environment.

Church is supposed to be the training wheels for how God uses you OUTSIDE the church and that is done with relationships with the body and the ones with experience teaching those without.

Re: Learn your gifts

I don't see gifts as being "used" but rather "operated in". I believe wholeheartedly in the gifts of the Spirit and their operation in the Apostolic church. However, when we see them as something to use at our whim, we tend toward showmanship. The gifts of the Spirit are for accomplishing the will of God! If someone is prophesying correctly 50% of the time, they don't need to learn how to "use their gift" better. They just need to learn how to shut up when God isn't speaking!

I have seen the gifts manifested powerfully for the purpose and will of God, and I have seen them abused for the manipulation of human emotions, almost to the point of witchcraft. The Church needs the element of the supernatural, but I'd rather be cold and lifeless than fake.

If someone is trying to operate in some supernatural work of God, yet their personal holiness and consecration is lacking, they will find themselves operating out of the flesh or another spirit. The true operation of the gifts always go hand in hand with the old paths, in my opinion.
