Re: GOP Debate Tonight
FERD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am so ticked!!!!
How in the world does this make sense? In Plyler v. Doe, the US Supreme Court rules that illegals cannot be discriminated against and must be educated K-12, but Perry and the Legislature are not supposed to allow these people to further their education?
Quote:
"Revisions to education laws in Texas in 1975 withheld state funds for educating children who had not been legally admitted to the United States and authorized local school districts to deny enrollment to such students. A 5-to-4 majority of the Supreme Court found that this policy was in violation of the Fourteenth Amendment, as illegal immigrant children are people "in any ordinary sense of the term", and therefore had protection from discrimination unless a substantial state interest could be shown to justify it."
Texas officials had argued that illegal immigrants were not "within the jurisdiction" of the state and could thus not claim protections under the Fourteenth Amendment. The court majority rejected this claim, finding instead that "no plausible distinction with respect to Fourteenth Amendment 'jurisdiction' can be drawn between resident aliens whose entry into the United States was lawful, and resident aliens whose entry was unlawful."

This makes NO sense. How can you say someone that is here illegally has the same rights of someone here legally? I mean why not let the bank robber go, he may need the money to feed his family????
Same logic!

That is true. But, I am coming from the perspective of the Federal Government hamstringing the states.
In other words, Perry is getting pounded for the in-state tuition when the US Supreme Court has ruled that we cannot discriminate against them in the public school system.
So, the Texas Legislature voted 184 with 4 dissenting votes, that they should be allowed in-state tuition (furthering their education), with requirements attached, i.e., working toward their citizenship, etc.
We are not allowed to override the Federal Government's authority on border control, but Perry is seen as soft on immigration. That is simply not the case.

Well, it will probably cost him the nomination then. All you gotta do is win the nomination. This president is so not going to get reelected Lady Gaga could run against him and win.

Regardless of what straw polls were won, Perry is still leading in the national polls. So, I wouldn't quite count him out yet.
I wanted to edit this post to include this article from the highly respected, Thomas Sowell:
Quote:
Superman vs. Warm Body
The current outbreak of "gotcha" attacks on Texas Governor Rick Perry show one of the other pitfalls for those who are trying to pick a national leader. The three big sound-bite issues used against him during the TV "debates" have involved Social Security, immigration and a vaccine against cervical cancer.
Where these three issues have been discussed at length, whether in a few media accounts or in Governor Perry's own more extended discussions in an interview on Sean Hannity's program, his position was far more reasonable than it appeared to be in either his opponents' sound bites or even in his own abbreviated accounts during the limited time available in the TV "debate" format.

Re: GOP Debate Tonight
If Christie runs all bets are off. He will annihilate the GOP field in debates and with his confident, no holds barred leadership. I don't want to simply see BO get defeated, I want a great leader to emerge and help usher a recovery to our nation economically and restore American confidence. We also need a leader who isn't led by his handlers and by the lobbyists. Christie strikes me as that kind of leader.

If looking deeper and finding that he has less than a stellar conservative record, it's going to hurt him.
But, we shall see, possibly, after his speech at the Reagan Library next Tuesday what he plans to do.
Any candidate running against Obama, I will vote for. I will hold my nose if it is Romney and be unhappy about it, but getting Obama out is paramount.

Re: GOP Debate Tonight
I'm kinda liking the sound of Gingrich/Cain 2012. Gingrich is so well-known and knowledgeable. Cain would be getting his feet even wetter as the VP since he has a relatively small political resume, but it would expose him to the playing field and allow him to pursue the top role eventually.
But, we'll see. I'm still keeping all of them in orbit 'til election time...

Me too. Even though I am still strongly leaning toward Perry, I'm not 100% in the tank with him.
And this is funny. Joy Behar was asking Michael Moore if Americans would vote for a fat man, i.e. Chris Christie.
Moore replies, "Yes, because most Americans look like me." LOL!
