When does a wife take on the name of her husband! Is it after the ceremony and then
a pronouncement that they are now man and wife? The actual "becoming as one" is
when they are joined together as one! I believe when our spirit is united with the Holy
Spirit is when we become one with HIM! But there are preparations before that that
bring us to that point of Oneness.

When a man asks a woman to be his wife, there is the acceptance, then the prepara-
tions, and then the ceremony. Then the consumation of the marriage!
She has a new identity. His name becomes her name! One man, one woman and
one NAME!

My thoughts anyway...!

True, the public ceremony is actually the rite that announces and makes public what is transpiring between the man and women. There is a lot that continues to take place in the relationship, which eventually produces children. But it all begins when two are attracted to each other and decide to walk together. It is the relationship of love that unifies and causes them to publicly proclaim (the wedding) what is taking place between them. The relationship is the substance, not the rite.

Re: Why I returned to UPC!!!!!!!!!

However, doesn't the rite usually precede the relationship. Yes, just as the law (shadow) preceded the substance (Seed-Jesus Christ), the ritual (wedding) precedes the substance (relationship)! Almost 52 yrs ago, we had a ritual (wedding) but
I can assure you today, it's more about our relationship (substance). The proof is in the relationship!

40 yrs after your ritual, I know you and your sweet wife, have a relationship of substance.

53 yrs ago, My husband and I had a spiritual "ritual", if you could call it that. We both repented, (in different locations), were baptized in Jesus Name, for the remission of our sins, and received the Holy Spirit, evidenced by speaking in other tongues as the Spirit gave the utterance. Today that "ritual" or beginning, has resulted in a relationship with much substance. Both our unions have endured the test of time. Our wedding (natural) and our Union with Christ, (spiritural) are still intact. The fruit of both have proven to be of tremendous worth to us both.

Then I guess that by your definition Acts 10 is like sex before marriage then huh?

This is what happens when we interpret God's word through our lenses.

Really??? Where does Paul tell them to speak in tongues? Where does Paul say "for the remission of sins?" It is not really there and you are adding to this passage in Acts 19.

Re: Why I returned to UPC!!!!!!!!!

If I were to consider the Apostolic doctrine, I'd see nothing wrong with the notion that God's elect (however you define it) will speak in tongues. The question always arises when people have labored, wept, begged, pleaded, repented, repented, repented, repented, and still they don't have the tongues experience. It can be spiritually brutal.

But the bottom line is... it's God's Spirit. He gives it as He so desires according to His purposes. No one is entitled to the Holy Ghost, only those whom God has chosen (however you wish to define it).

I'm glad I don't have to try to speak in tongues. I found something in Jesus

  1. There is One God. This one God reveals Himself distinctly as Father, Son and Holy Ghost.
  2. The Son is God himself in a human form or "God manifested in the flesh" (1Tim 3:16)
  3. Every sinner must repent of their sins.
  4. That Jesus name baptism is the only biblical mode of water baptism.
  5. That the Holy Ghost is for today and is received by faith with the initial evidence of speaking in tongues.

Right, it is not something to try to do. Whoever asks without trying will get the Spirit.
