Seascapes, thanks for replying... I dont think you read the whole thing. I said you were wrong with the term "do away with" SS.
I did not say you were wrong when you used the "P" word. WE DO WANT TO PRIVIATIZE.... Its a good thing...that doesnt mean "do away with"
It does mean, remove control of the dollars from the goverment.
it does mean take away the vested interest the government has in our deaths...
please read on! you might find "Privitize" is not such a dirty word after all....
Ferd, got some questions...what does Privatize mean? If people do the P-word, how will that effect Social Security? If you quit paying the Social Security taxes in your paycheck and put it in your 401K, what will that do to Social Security eventually? If you put the Social Security taxes in the Stock Market and the Stock Market crashes, like it has in the past, just what if it does, where will your retirement be?
The Social Security system has been wonderful to many, many people for 75 years. It has supported children when their fathers die and their wives. It has helped many that became disabled and couldn't work to support their families. The Social Security system works, and it is proven. Now Ferd, one more question, Will the Stock Market (401K) do this for people?
Democrats are also for the "little guy". Unless of course you are a tiny little unborn baby.
Deacon, if you are calling the "Working Middle Class" ...."little guys", you are right, the Republicans are for the wealthy, the ones making over $250,000 a year and much more. The republicans are for the "Big" Insurance companies that rip off the people that they suppose to insure. The republicans are for the "Big" oil companies that rip us off at the gas pumps, making billions of dollars profit. Yes, the Democrats are for the people that make less than $250,000.00 a year, but most "little republicans" can't see that they support the ones ripping their own families off. It is sad, and I feel sorry for those "little republicans" that can't see two feet in front of their faces.
As far as the comment about unborn babies, that has been totally misrepresented about the democrats. I do not know one democrat that approves of babies being aborted unless it is absolutely necessary under certain medical conditions, and when you pin a republican down, they will also agree to this also, but won't admit it openly.
I know of at least one Democrat who regards abortion as birth control:
"I've got two daughters. 9 years old and 6 years old. I am going to teach them first of all about values and morals. But if they make a mistake, I don't want them punished with a baby."

SS is a joke in the 1960's Ronald Reagan suggested people put their SS money in annuities which are extremely safe. History shows that this annuities would have returned three to four times what SS returns.
To suggest that SS has been good to people is to suggest that if a the if only steals 75% of your money he is being kind to you.
Republicans want SS to exist. Rs want a payroll tax that is required and cannot be gotten around. But republicans want that money in individual accounts and Rs do not congress to be able to get their grubby hands on the money.
And my friend, please show me where I suggested that a persons SS account would be invested in the stock market? I didn't I said the investments should be very safe.

Ferd, I have one question... Would a privatized system be guaranteed?
Depending on how it is structured. Annuities have very strong guarantees.
Frog. Did you see the debt clock? Are you suggesting that because the federal government says so?
Unfunded mandates right now are in excess of 78 trillion dollars. The unfunded part means there are no taxes that can be collected to pay for promises that have been made by the politicians.
Someone at some point will not collect on the promise that has been made to them.

Another question..... How guaranteed is our present system? The politicians have taken our SS money and used it for any and everything that they pleased. Talked about putting it in a lock box and then they stole the lock box.
I think it would be safer any place beyond the hands of the money keepers in Washington.
Probably the Stock Market would even be safer than Washington over a life time. See how much our SS investment in Washington is worth now.

A strong "guarantee" is not an "absolute" guarantee. That is my problem with the privatize mindset. Sure it will be great to have it privatized until that one time when it fails because it is not absolutely guaranteed.
Of course the debt our current system causes throws a whole other variable into the equation because as it is now the absolute guarantee method cannot be sustained. So, maybe even if privatization has flaws then it is still better than an unsustainable system? It would appear to be. But I have one question... how does the privatization method affect an elderly person who didn't work all her life? Will that system still help her or does it only help those who worked their whole lives?

I didnt answer one of your questions here. and it is a very good question.
You asked: If people do the P-word, how will that effect Social Security? If you quit paying the Social Security taxes in your paycheck and put it in your 401K, [B]what will that do to Social Security eventually?
I think what you are really asking is, if we privatize what happens to all the people that are currently on SS and are now being paid by the SS taxes collected from current workers?
That is the big question in privitization of the system.
First of all, lets deal with the fact that privitization does not mean getting rid of SS. It means changing the system so that my SS dollars go into my account and not into the government coffers to be used by congress as they see fit.
Secondly, lets also understand that we must insure that everyone on SS and everyone CLOSE to being on SS needs to be protected.
The transition to a privitized system cannot harm these people.
Here is the truth. No Republican has EVER stated that we should just toss these people and let them fend for themselve.
Here is a second truth. Democrats in Washington have said repeatedly that Republicans want to kill old people and they want to take away their SS checks.
The fact is, the current system will reach a point where we simply cannot send out checks. that day is fast approaching.
We have to do something and we have to do it sooner than later. But Republicans do not want to take money from elderly people who rely on their SS checks. period.
