Re: Almost saved- so near at yet so far
But, is it the faith, or the works, PO. Remember, what some claim is faith is actually works. When we are saved, our nature is changed. When we are baptized, we are doing so because of salvation, not to effect salvation.
One group does it in order to be saved.
The other does it because they are saved.
It is not in the action, but in faith. Yes, faith will have works, and this is why in all the instance in scripture, when a soul is converted, they are baptized. Remember the story of the Philippian jailer in Acts, when after the miracle, he asked Paul what he must do to be saved. The response of Paul was that he should believe on the Lord Jesus Christ. It was after his belief that he was baptized as a sign of the conversion, not to be converted.
Another story comes to mind, of the Ethiopian eunuch. As he and Steven approached water, he asked what hinders him to be baptized. The brother asked one question, and that was whether he believed. It was only after this did he consent to baptizing the man.
For it is by grace we are saved through faith, not of works. Salvation is a gift of God that man can never merit.

That's the big argument on "eis". I believe you must be baptized "in order to" and not "because of" to be saved. You won't be changing my mind about that any time soon.

Re: Almost saved- so near and yet so far
Outward things aren't the only indicator of a person's spiritual state, but they do reveal some things.
If you see some cat sitting smoking a bong full of pot, most of us, including you enlightened folks, would assume that the dopehead isn't saved.
And you don't have a black and white verse saying he can't smoke dope.
