I was thinking about this thread and went to his church website to see if he had the message on podcast, which he did. I thought he had a very balanced approach. If you don't have time to listen to both of them, I especially enjoyed Part 2. Very practical advise.

Entertainment does not have to be watered-down, Puritanical protectionism.
Brokenness and sin are part of all our stories. Hearing other stories, if they are to be considered real, will have some of this. Some films make these accessories and props the main subject -- even glorifying it above all else -- and others include these as part of a much more (and even sometimes redeeming) story.

You didn't listen to his message. He covers these things you mentioned very well, IMO.
