It would be grounds for local zoning officials and the community at large to start asking questions. And they should be free to question the project without being unfairly tarred as "racists" or "xenophobes" simply because they have concerns about what's being built on the corner.

It was enough when Rauf and his cohort Sheik Muhammed Gemeaha blamed the 9/11 attacks on "the Jews." Gemeaha was so caustic in his statements that he eventually had to leave the country and return to Egypt. Rauf has been carrying on the work of Manhattan's ICC ever since.

This history is important to help us understand the ICC and its plans for this site. If all they want to do is play basketball and pray - why isn't Gemeaha still here to lead the effort? And what role does Gemeaha still play in the ICC?

The current staff have not ruled out accepting funds from Iran to build this center (http://abcnews.go.com/US/Politics/is...ry?id=11429998). At what point would all of these people have to register as "agents of a foreign power?" Many American lobbyists who represent foreign clients do so. Since the State Department has been involved in Mr. Rauf's travels, is Mr. Rauf an officially registered foreign agent?

The governor of New York has tried to mediate the debate. Rauf is currently in Malaysia where Christian missionaries are banned and a guerrilla war is being staged against neighboring Thailand's forces in their own predominantly Muslim south. The ICC has used his absence as an excuse not to meet with Gov. Paterson (http://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local...100967889.html).

Why not bring Gemeaha back from Egypt to talk to the Governor?

''It does not represent at all the policy and the beliefs of the Islamic Cultural Center, nor what Imam Gemeaha was teaching the Islamic community during his three and a half years here,'' said Mohammad Abdullah Abulhasan, Kuwait's ambassador to the United Nations, who heads the mosque's board. ''It really took me by surprise to see this.''

I just love that! LOL! "It really took me by surprise to see this." LOL!

No one is being denied "the right to build a mosque." The question is just about the appropriateness of the location. This particular location restricts the rights of those who lost loved ones on 9/11 to "pursue happiness" as they are otherwise empowered to do.

No mosque is needed on this site by any American Muslim, except one guy. The fact that he has literally tens of millions of dollars from foreign sources is the only thing that makes him significant.

As I said before, Obama simply committed a gaffe at dinner when he made a statement without his teleprompter present. Everything else that he's done has been to back track on those statements.
I am a Conservative.

Registered Republican and have been for years. You know I just like making the case for the other side and sometimes, I actually agree with the other side-- just not as often as it appears.

In protecting the liberty of that one private American citizen, he protected the rights of ALL American citizens. Again, consider the nuances of his actions if he came out against it and attempted to use his Federal powers in a case that is clearly not a Federal issue?

The President did well here. Realize that he would have been criticized regardless of his stance or lack of a stance and he speaks just fine without the teleprompter. Dude, the teleprompter jokes are lame. Everyone knows that this President is an excellent public speaker. There are, however, people within our own party that could take a few public speaking lessons from our President.

Isn't the mosque about ten blocks away from ground zero anyway? It's not like the planes crashed into the exact location that the mosque is being built. So how far away does it have to be?

I didn't think it was appropriate for the klan to march in Skokie, IL or in my hometown.

I don't think it is appropriate for a state capitol to fly the "stars and bars".

There are a lot of things I find highly inappropriate and downright offensive. However, America as a country protects the rights and freedoms of her people. For this, we should all be grateful.

As time goes by, I agree more and more with the Mayor of NYC and the President of the USA-- on this issue.

Two blocks away and one of the plane's landing gear did crash into the "exact location that the mosque is being built". That would make it a part of Ground Zero. That issue is being so totally overlooked by the media. That is one of the reasons they wanted it for landmark.

"But out of a baby-blue sky suddenly stained with smoke, a plane’s landing-gear assembly the size of a World War II torpedo crashed through the roof and down through two empty selling floors of the Burlington Coat Factory."

It is a total provocation.

Whatever you think of Glen Beck, he has some very well documented information here.

Consider the nuance of the President of the United States staying out of a local political squabble. For myself, I didn't even say anything about this issue until the POTUS brought it up. That's really the only reason I've even jumped in.

He didn't have to say anything. His problem was that there was no teleprompter there and he ended up speaking off the cuff. Bad move for him.

I agree he should have avoided comment on it.
