Our pastor, at Lake Highlands Church is a personal friend of Eugene Peterson of the Message. He uses "The Message", but not even a majority of the time, in his preaching and teaching. I believe it is best to have a very good working knowledge of the KJV or ESV, then I believe The Message, the NLB, TGNB are great assets to our study and meditation.
Years ago people used lots of scripture because they were teaching the Bible. These days there is a scripture or two used to lay the ground work for what they want to say.
There isn't a lot of real teaching going on these days. At least from what I've seen.
I remember my pastor F.E. Curts teaching Thursday nights. Thursday was Bible Study and he used large charts. Attached is an old picture (I have no idea of the date) of him teaching from his Tabernacle Chart. At one time the Pentecostal Publishing House sold a book on The Tabernacle that he had written. Bro. Curts died in 1968 or 1969.
Attached also is a newer picture from a church about an hour and a half from here. I've never been there but may get there some day.

Yes sir...these types of lessons require much preparation, study & prayer.
Did you notice the Kero-sun in the picture brother_barker.jpg. Looks like it's a few inches from the cabinet and a plastic chair. Talk about teaching that sets a church "on fire."
I like the Message, but I only use it as a reference. It helped with teaching Sunday School because it was paraphrased in a way younger kids understood it. But beyond that, for me it's just reference.
I prefer the KJV and ESV. I'll also use NIV if necessary.
