Such a kind post.

<< 1 Corinthians 13 >>
King James Version
1Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal. 2And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing. 3And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.

4Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, 5Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; 6Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; 7Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.

8Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away. 9For we know in part, and we prophesy in part. 10But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away. 11When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things. 12For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known. 13And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.

Well, what DOES scripture say? For one thing jewelry (mainly rings) are almost always used in the most complimentary fashion when used to something else in a positive light. Rings are also talked about as a sign of honor as well. How is this "justifying"? Are the pastors convictions THAT far above the Word itself?

Discussing something doesn't mean I'm already doing it and trying to "justify" it. I only wear a watch and my wedding rings. However, I'm interested in knowing what the Bible actually has to say about jewelry. Why? Because I want to know God's thoughts on the matter, just like I do on every other matter. I'm not asking so I can go buy a diamond bracelet or get my ears pierced.

Great post, though. Clearly illustrates why conservatives who want to have legitimate discussions are forced to look outside the walls in order to do so. THIS is the kind of attitude we're met with.

I know a lot of stubborn, lukewarm conservatives who think they're spiritual just because they follow lots of rules. Newsflash: It's the Holy Ghost that makes you "Spirit"ual, and if you are malicious and unkind, you are telling the world that you don't have that Spirit in you. I've never walked away from spending personal time with God and been led to say something ugly like you just posted. It makes me wonder if you even talked to Him today--or yesterday--or the day before that....Did you? Spend time with God today?

John 13:34 A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.
John 13:35 By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.

Ephesians 4:15 But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:

I John 4:20 If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?
I John 4:21 And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also.

James 1:26 If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man's religion is vain.

James 3:9 Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God.
James 3:10 Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.
James 3:11 Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter?
James 3:12 Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? either a vine, figs? so can no fountain both yield salt water and fresh.
James 3:13 Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom.

Colossians 4:6 Let your speech be alway with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.

Ephesians 4:29 Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers

Yep. That, too.

Do you know what the term "not" means?
Yeah, we see that. Do you?

I've seen preachers that launch diatribes against someone who wears a modest wedding band or a broach on their dress, while wearing a suit that costs 800 dollars, shoes that cost 500 dollars, and cuff links that cost 150 dollars, and more. They are fervently amened by wives with all manner of adornment in their hair (somehow hair, the only place where adornment is specifically prohibited in this verse, has become the acceptable only place to wear ornamentation), who are themselves wearing clothes that are vastly beyond the financial reach of almost anyone in the congregation. They look down their long noses ensconced in their luxurious mansions at the great, carnal unwashed and condemn them for being in violation of the same scriptures they choose to ignore themselves.

The HYPOCRISY IS MORE THAN I CAN STAND! (Yes, I AM SHOUTING)

I've observed the disgusting hypocrisy of this position for years and it sickens me.

AMEN

but

even though there are those hogs who gluttonously gorge themselves from the church troughs at the expense of the saints who are struggling just to get by,

thank God

for those who selflessly and sacrificially serve as shepherds throughout this world wherever their part of the "little flock" may be pasturing.

How true those words are. Thank God for shepherds that work for God's kingdom, not their own.

We can get so discouraged when we see these "pomaded, privileged, powdered, pampered princes of pentecost practicing their pimping, pontificating, pushing, playing and politicking (to borrow some imagery from someone's previous post) that we want to throw up our hands in disgust and give up on all ministers,
but,
remember,
there are lots of the genuine article out there who are genuinely serving the Lord.
