Humming Is One Helpful Habit!

I have hummed my whole life!

My daughter said when she was younger that she never worried about getting lost in a store because she could always hear me humming - lol!

I actually started wondering a couple weeks ago what makes some people hum and others not. Tried to find something on the subject and couldn't.

Low and behold yesterday yahoo had this on the home page:

My Father-in-law whistles. He caught the habit from his Father-in-law, who told him after a few years- when someone annoyed him he (Grampy) would whistle rather than say something he may regret later.

I usually sing out loud. Sometimes it annoys people at the grocery store!

Interesting. My wife has determined (somewhat recently considering we have been bound for over two decades) that I generally whistle when I am annoyed or stressed, but certainly when I am annoyed with her.

I genuinely do not believe this to be the case.

I can always remember whistling more then the other kids in the neighborhood (singing/song type whistling). It may be that I do whistle in the circumstances when I am convinced that any speaking is not going to produce anything worthwhile, but it is not inconsistent with a general 'habit' of whistling. It seems quite possible that the audible frequency may bother her, this despite the fact that I am on-key and generally true to the original melody.

Do most (or a lot of) people find whistling annoying if heard in a house?

Humming may be sounded in a 'softer' frequency spectrum but it can leave the hearer with the old, 'lights on and nobody's home' feelling.
