My information came from a Frech doctor who was at the Great Lakes Genetic Medical center in Milwaukee, WI.
Our first son was born with Fanconi Anemia a very rare recessive blood disorder.
When we went to have a second child.
We wanted to try and have a child to match his bone marrow type.
In 1993 the advancements of today were not available.
The very first selection of bone marrow typing done in a dish at the splitting of cells after conception in a lab.
For the purposes of selecting a human to not have a genetic disease and match another sibblings mone marrow type was done at Fairview University Hospital in Minn, MN.
A few years ago.
The girl that was born and matched her brothers Bone marrow as a perfect match.
Was born to save her older 3 year old brother who had Fanconi Anemia.
They then took his T-Cells from the cord blood and administered a Bone marrow transplant with the T-cells.
The richest T-cells a person will ever have in their body are the cord blood T-Cells which are trasferred at the cutting of the cord.
In hard births these cells are cut off and cause jaundice.
It takes up to 14 days for the Bone Marrow to produce enough T-cells when that happens for a baby to be secure.
That is why many jaundice births require a child to be placed in an incubator.
Our second son did not match our first son.
Our youngest son still has a 25% chance of being a Fanconi carrier of the recessive gene.
The chance of my wife and I having the same recessive genetic disorder is one in 340,000 chances of 2 people having a child.
That is increased with the fact there is only a 25% chance that each of our children would have the disease.
The person who matched my son was a 24 year old white male from the eastern timezone of the US.
He has never agreed to come forward.
We do however send him pictures and notes through the BMT registration center.
He has sent prayers and continued hopes back to our son.
My thoughts are why did such a young man take the time to donate his Bone Marrow for a child?
I personally think he was in the military or he is in prison.
In both of these cases thier bone marrow is typed when a DNA extraction is taken when entering both system.
Only 10 % of those that donate Bone Marrow refuse to have personal contact 3 years after survival of the patient.
The same French doctor told us that this man is in our genetic family bloodline according to his DNA profile.
It was a great act of kindness this man gave us and my son.
Here is my sons website.
My wife has kept it for over 4 years.
He had his transplant at Fairview University Hospital in July 2004.
Priase the Lord!
