Divine attributes

Recently I read A.W. Tozer's book, 'Knowledge of the Holy' which is essentially about God's attributes. The book has impacted me and it got me to thinking back through the years and realizing that I've not heard much preaching about God's majesty and his many divine attributes like omniscience, goodness, mercy, justice, omnipresence, omnipotence, etc... I can say that I've heard references to these things w/in sermons, but rarely is God's majesty preached with a focus on God's transcendence to the point that you want to fall on your face and worship God for who he is. Am I alone in this? I wonder what affect this has had on the spiritual psyche of the church? Tozer claims we lost a sense and reverence of God's majesty because we rarely think of him as awesome, terrible, mighty God. I tend to agree.

Re: Divine attributes

In our church it is a very common theme, but I agree with you that on an overall basis it is not preached much.

But then again, it doesn't seem that preaching about Jesus coming again gets very much attention either.

One of the most remarkable scriptures to me is found in Revelations 1:14-16:

14 His head and his hairs were white like wool, as white as snow; and his eyes were as a flame of fire;
15 And his feet like unto fine brass, as if they burned in a furnace; and his voice as the sound of many waters.
16 And he had in his right hand seven stars: and out of his mouth went a sharp twoedged sword: and his countenance was as the sun shineth in his strength. (KJV)

What amazes me about this passage is the areas I have emphasized. His countenance was as looking at the sun in it's strength and yet in the midst of that brilliance John describes His eyes as a flame of fire.

Can you imagine point out a fire in the midst of the sun? The brilliance and Majesty of the One we call King is an amazing thing.

Re: Divine attributes

Yeah, too few of us (myself included) react like the prophet did when he saw the majesty of God and fell on his face in humility.

Do you guys put your sermons online that I can hear them? I'd like to hear more preaching along these lines.

Re: Divine attributes

No, we have looked into it, but have not gotten to that place in our web development.
