Re: What comes of those who do not speak tongues?
Can it be faked? Yes, and often.
Can a true believer have sin in their lives and still manifest the Gifts or speak in tongues? Yup! Just read the litany of charges against the Corinthian Church. And yet, it says that they "came behind in no gift." I Co 1:6
Read through the letters to the Seven Churches in the Revelation. All had good points and bad points. No perfect Churches, then or now. No perfect people either. The Apostle Paul, role model for thousands; wrote 2/3 of the New Testament. Yet he considered himself to be "the chief of sinners." Yet he thanked God he spoke in tongues more than them all.
Tongues are not a shield against sin. They do however, serve to "edify" or build us up in faith, which helps us put to death the deeds of the flesh. ( Jude 20; I Co 14:4).
Keep on askin' those questions!
Matthew 7:7
Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you:
Luke 8:10
And he said, Unto you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God...
It's a grand adventure!

Almost forgot! If you don't "get it" the first time. We give you three more chances, then a letter of recommendation to the First Baptist Church.

Re: What comes of those who do not speak tongues?
I have to add to that Larry,
For everything that makes the church we found the one, sarcasm is in the top five!
One thing I recall from the Apostolic school I attended was good times, good laughs...
I have never found this in a church until now! It's great, and still respectful.
So I honestly give it to you Apostolic that you have the very best sense of humor across the board. We need a "funniest wise-crack we've ever heard in church thread"

ROFL... if only it were so!
Our old pastor used to say "Just because you can say 'see-my-tie-tie-my-tie' doesn't make you a Christian!"

Im afraid Yeshua takes it more seriously than this. He actually EXPECTS his people to be perfect.
48 Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect. Matt. 5:48

Re: What comes of those who do not speak tongues?
And that perfection.maturity is not found in our works, nor in our strength, but in the finished work of Christ, and in us being in Him. Paul matured daily into the image of Christ as he was submissive to the work Christ did in him. The same principle applies to us today. We are called to be holy as He is holy, and nothing we do can do this. We are holy as He is holy as we abide in Christ, nothing more and nothing less. As we are in Him, He works through the Holy Spirit transforming us into the image of Messiah.

I'm not a Bible scholar by any means; however, I do believe you are misinterpreting this verse. A rudimentary check of the word "perfect" shows the meaning as "fully developed," which is different than what I feel your implication was.
The Greek word used here, "τέλειοι" is also found:
Quote:
Brethren, be not children in understanding: howbeit in malice be ye children, but in understanding be men. 1 Corinthians 14:20
|
Quote:
Let us therefore, as many as be perfect, be thus minded: and if in any thing ye be otherwise minded, God shall reveal even this unto you. Philippians 3:15
|
Quote:
Epaphras, who is one of you, a servant of Christ, saluteth you, always labouring fervently for you in prayers, that ye may stand perfect and complete in all the will of God. Colossians 4:12
|
Quote:
But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing. James 1:4
|
Please correct me if I'm wrong, as I'm no scholar or Greek master. But IMO, there's no way, as humans, to satisfy the statement Jesus makes in Matt 5:48 if it truly means perfect as implied. But it is possible to become "fully developed" as the word is defined in the Greek.

Look at the verses you have given.
Epaphras, who is one of you, a servant of Christ, saluteth you, always labouring fervently for you in prayers, that ye may stand perfect and complete in all the will of God. Colossians 4:12
Therein is the exact meaning. If we DO the will of God in all things we will be perfect in doing his will.
