Finally got my handgun - Taurus 9mm. Being new it's still a little tight. I had trouble getting the last bullet loaded in the cartridge. Had to hand it to my husband to finish.

I did well on the range yesterday evening. Shot just as well as my husband and son at 3 and 7 yards. Got my bull's eye at 3 yards and stayed in the 10 ring on the target. Having trouble at 10 yards, but yesterday was my first time handling the gun,

We are practicing to obtain our Conceal Carry Licenses.

On the range, this is what I have to accomplish to get my license:

(1) 20 rounds will be fired from 3 yards, as follows:
(A) 5 rds. will be fired ‘One Shot Exercise”; two seconds allowed for each shot;
(B)10 rds. will be fired “Two Shot Exercise”; three seconds allowed for each two shots;
(C) 5 rds. will be fired; ten seconds allowed for five shots.

(2) 20 rounds will be fired from 7 yards, as follows:
(A) 5 rds. will be fired; ten seconds allowed for five shots.
(B) 5 rds. will be fired in two stages:
(i) two shots will be fired in four seconds; and
(ii) three shots will be fired in six seconds.
(C) 5 rds. will be fired “One Shot Exercise”; three seconds will be allowed for each shot;
(D) 5 rds. will be fired; fifteen seconds allowed for five shots.

(3) 10 rounds will be fired from fifteen yards, as follows:
(A) 5 rds. will be fired in two stages:
(i) two shots fired in six seconds; and
(ii) three shots fired in nine seconds.
(B) 5 rds. will be fired; fifteen seconds allowed for five shots.

Wow! I didn't have to do anything like that on the range while qualifying. All I had to do was fire ten shots at a man sized target and nail 5 rounds at 15 feet and another 5 at 30. Granted, the target on the man sized poster was the size of a quarter AND we had to do it while wearing a helmet (with the blast shield down which prevented us from seeing) AND while being shot with lasers from said target -oh, which by the way, was moving around randomly.

I realized afterwards that I could almost see it and that I had just taken my first step into a larger world.

Yes, it is pretty involved. I'm particularly interested and concerned to know what the statutes are in Texas. I have downloaded the information from the Texas website - http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/Interne...rms/CHL-16.pdf, but haven't really read through it yet.

I have to have experience with and be comfortable with my gun before I can sign up for the class (not there yet) and it's also hard to find an opening. I'm trying to get myself ready, as my son and husband are already ready, so we can go for the only class available in mid-September.

I have to have experience with the mechanisms, i.e. safety, etc. I'm still not able to pull back the slide to chamber the first bullet. It is very tight. My husband is limbering it up for me.

I was also having trouble remembering to keep my finger off the trigger, even though the safety was on. I'm glad we had ear plugs. Seems like my son's Glock was louder than my gun. My husband said I may do better taking the test with the Glock, but I really want to be comfortable with and use my own gun.

He asked if I had fun yesterday. I said, "Well, there was a lot to remember, so I was concentrating on that. Can't say I was having fun until I'm comfortable."

Still plan on using the 12-gauge for an intruder. Pump action, not necessary to aim and fire!

You do need to be absolutely familiar with your weapon for it to be truly useful should it be needed. It is also a good thing if something goes wrong while firing which would give you an opportunity to ejected the jammed casing -which can be difficult depending on how it is stuck in there. When I carry my Ruger 9mm I just started actually keeping a round chambered which means all I have to do now is draw while flicking off the safety with my thumb at the same time, then simply pulling the trigger. I've actually taken some criticism by more then one person for even keeping the safety on.

I get you. You can see I started this thread in 2008 am just now ready. I read the article to my husband about the 70,000 grandmothers in Florida with Conceal and Carry. He dropped me off at Kohl's last Saturday and, as usual, runs over to Academy. When I met him in the parking lot and got back in the vehicle, he said, "I got you a present." My reply, "It's not another tank top is it?" lol

This is funny because one time he bought me a camouflage tank top and said the same thing, "I bought you a present." I looked in the bag and said, "Thank you, but I am going to look like white trash wearing that." Sooooo, we get home, I tried it on and he said, "You are right. You do look like white trash."

Anyway, back to topic - I am ready now. We are having more trouble at the border and filtering our way. Just had another illegal break into a women's home close to here and raped her. You know the story that just happened in Shiner that was reported here also. So, yes, I am ready now.

And I will shoot their bloody carcass if one of them dares to come near me. Just sayin'....

He was at my house a couple weeks ago "giving me lesson" with his gun. I just don't know if I want that responsibility.

There was a drive by shooting at the house across from my bedroom windows this spring and that's when he said, "mom, it's time." I told him those people were looking for that one particular guy and a gun wouldn't help me in that case. I didn't even realize that I needed to get down on the ground when it was going on.

I'm just sticking with my club stick flashlight and pepper spray in the nightstand for now.

I never thought about the jammed casing! That would be very important. Still working on keeping it at a 45 degree angle while flicking off the safety.

At first you are afraid because, two other people are with you and you are having to carefully think about where you are pointing the thing while working with it.

My husband had his gun pointed, a little, toward our son's direction at one point. Even though not loaded it was a scary feeling. I said, "That is my only son you are pointing that gun toward." lol

Honey, if I have an intruder, I want to see blood and not mine. He won't be able to harm another person ever again. That's my take on it. I know myself enough to know that I would be totally furious before I would be afraid that someone would dare enter my house. "You crackhead. You are going to die today." Did I hear that line from a western?
