The Real Source of Mexico's Arms

You can't buy this stuff at a U.S. gun store. So where do the cartels get it? According to leaked diplomatic cables, there are three sources.

1. U.S. Defense Department shipments to Latin America, known and tracked by the U.S. State Department as "foreign military sales."

2. Weapons ordered by the Mexican government, tracked by the State Department as "direct commercial sales."

3. Aging, but plentiful arsenals of military weapon stores in Honduras, Guatemala and Nicaragua.

Even though these facts were well-known by the Obama administration, including Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Attorney General Eric Holder, it blamed much of the violence in Mexico on U.S. gun stores.

"More than 90 percent of the guns recovered in Mexico come from the United States, many from gun shops that line our border," President Obama said in February 2009.

Re: The Real Source of Mexico's Arms

President Obama says 90 percent of Mexico's recovered crime guns come the U.S. Not true.

The fact is, only 17 percent of guns found at Mexican crime scenes have been traced to the U.S.

They say we need strict gun control laws.

mexico has very strict gun control laws. How is that working out for them?

HOLDER: I’m not sure whether Mr. Breuer authorized it. You have to understand the way in which the Department operates. Although there are operations, this one has become — has gotten a great deal of publicity.
ISSA: Yeah, there are dead Americans as a result of this failed and reckless program. So I would say that it hasn’t gotten enough attention, has it, Mr. Attorney General?

Holder testifies, justifies, spins and obfuscates yesterday.

Holder is incompetant.

Holder should be fired.

Napalitano should be fired. They are more worried about groping 7 year old children and reckless regarding drug lords and border safety.

That's a key fact (the 17%). While the majority of guns that CAN BE tracked are tracked to U.S. sources (including the FBI and ATF as sources), the vast majority of guns captured from the cartels simply can't be traced at all.

And given the numbers of AK-47 style rifles I've seen in news photographs, I'd say the Central American sources are probably the most proliferate.

Project Gunrunner did provide a large number of Colt style M-16 knockoffs.
