What year did UPCI First vote Against TV

In my research it appears that the first Vote was in 1977, however I read somewhere that they may have voted as early as 1955 or 1957. Does anyone have the facts on this?

If any vote took place in the 50's it probably had more to do with radio.

RevBuddy may have some more info as he has some insight to the few that voted to allow it ... it was earlier than '77....

I think it was 77 or 78. The actual voting. I know in 1975 GC in Ft. Worth they talked about it on the floor.

My dad stood up and made a statement...

Take a look under the Holiness article of faith in the following link. It was adopted in 1977 at the General Conference.

I am not sure about anything formal before 1977.

Look at the link for Video that was adopted in 1983.

Here is the link.

The year was AD 70.

Early Christians recognized that the acceptance of television would be the "Abomination of Desolation" Daniel wrote about. They fed all of the tv's to the lions and went and hid in the catacombs so they would never be tempted to view tv programming.

There were a number of different resolutions presented over the years. The first one to pass involving television was (I think) 1955 as LC points out. This just dealt with ministers being prohibited to have a television in their homes. Then in 1977 the ban was placed upon using television for ministry or advertising.

The 1977 vote really shows the foresight of the proponents of the ban. In 1977, the ARPANET (precursor of the Internet) looked like this:

Only a person of real vision could have seen that this simple and humble beginning would one day support streaming video of a man preaching his burden over important issues like wax tipped shoe laces and postings of notices ordering the inspection of the under garments of young ladies at youth camp.
