As you probably know, first century accounts of Jesus were written in Greek using the term Ιησους [Iesous] which in fact does translate back to the Hebrew name Joshua meaning Yahweh is salvation. We get the English name Jesus from the Latin translation of the Greek manuscripts by Jerome in the early 5th century. The typical Jewish naming convention Jesus (Joshua) son of Joseph is used in Luke 4:22 and in John, but the Greek-speaking gentiles preferred titles with theological implications and moved quickly towards Jesus Christ or Christ Jesus. Since Jesus and Joseph were common names in the first century, early Christians sought to differentiate their Jesus by using Jesus of Nazareth, Jesus, son of David, and of course Jesus, Son of God.

In the past Jesus was called "Iesu" in English. The name Jesus came later.

It seems every time another doctrine comes out, like the emphasis on which Hebrew name should be spoken, when never speaking an anglicized or Greek version, they're always done kind of fleshly type oriented doctrines. The way you actually said it, the sound waves that come out of your mouth... and it's all materialistic. The truth is what's in the heart and in faith. The Bible says that when the apostles saw a man healed they said that Jesus' name, through faith in his name, made the man whole. It wasn't through proper pronunciation of a certain language of that name. It was through faith in that name. That points to the knowledge of the one who died on the cross and resurrected again for our salvation, and the power he wields because he's conquered everything and is king of kings and Lord of lords. It's talking about his authority and power when it talks about in the name. That's not to say we don't say the name at all. But it is saying we don't put so much emphasis on it that it has to be the correct pronunciation of the exact letters that we're reading in the Hebrew. It's like one man wisely said, if the proper pronunciation was important in which language we speak, then everybody with a harelip would never be able to do anything in the name, because it would be impossible for them to make the correct pronunciation if it was made known to them.

Yes in Greek Joshua and Jesus is the same. But in Hebrew yet is the same name is spelled differently.
First was Joshua (Joshua) and then became Joshua (Jesus) ,it was probably shortening.
Yes you are right they feel ,they had to separate the name of other people with the same name. That is why every baptism was "in the name of Jesus Christ" or "in the name of Lord Jesus" ,never was a baptism just "in Jesus name"

The first time we see the name Jesus is when God chooses the son of Nuh to drive His people in the promised land! That was a picture of out future salvation . Keep in mind God changed the name of Oshea to Jesus. "i will put my name on him"

It was Yehoshua. It was shortened to Yeshua
