Personally, I believe that the government shouldn't be regulating marriage in the first place. Marriage should be a private contract, the terms and conditions stipulated by those involved be they straight, gay, polygamous, polyamorous, etc. The government should only get involved when there is a breach of contract that cannot be settled out of court.

Get the government out of marriage and allow individual couples (of whatever flavor) define their relationship as they wish.
