Screaming and Fist Pounding

Why do UPC preachers scream so loud that their veins pop and why do they pound fists on podium? This scares my autistic son, but if we try other churches til we find one who doesn't do this, we have to get a letter. So to me, that prevents us from really shopping to find one who doesn't scare my son. To be honest, it scares me too. I feel like it means there are anger issues with the pastor. If I spoke to him like that, I'd have to be way beyond my breaking point. I've never been that angry at anyone. Other than the screaming and pounding, he's the best preacher I've had as far as what he says. I just wish he understood that my son and I believe him whether he shouts or not. I don't feel like he expects us to believe him. It's like he expects us to be belligerent.

Re: Screaming and Fist Pounding

I can't say why your pastor specifically does the fist pounding and screaming other than usually especially in the UPC those that do are considered more "passionate". It also might be that his particular style is of the more "firebrand" variety.

My church and pastor is UPC and I pretty much never here him scream or pound fists on the podium. Most of the ministers he invites to preach don't have that technique either. Every now and then we have one that does. Now my youth pastor has done a bit of that maybe 2 or 3 times but its not his normal style at all.

Some people respond to that some people don't. Some messages and subjects lend themselves to that kind of preaching... some don't.

I don't think its a UPC thing as much as a stylistic choice.

Its' all personal style of preaching, derived from what the preacher usually liked seeing in others who preached while he was developing his own style.

I don't care for all the "theatrics" some use in preaching either... I get so much more out of a message if theatrics aren't included to get their point across. Maybe you could talk to your pastor and explain to him that the screaming and fist pounding is scaring your son. Long shot, but you could try....

If you don't like them yelling and sweating, just imagine when it all breaks lose and they go to shouting! Sister Foofoofnick, has her oatmeal box fly out of her hairdo, bobby pins shooting across the church like shrapnel. Shoes getting kicked off, whole youth group shouting and praying in the altar. The screaming and pounding thing will be a blink of the moment once the people get to shouting.

That's a show all right! I've seen plenty of it too. One lady I know broke her arm when she was running the aisles with her eyes closed and ran smack into the wall. Gotta love that Holy Ghost!

We had a sister in our church who would twirl all around the sanctuary with eyes closed and never hit a pew, a corner, a wall, or anyone running the pews. Also my Brother Frank and His wife knew a brother in Mountain View Arkansas who would run the tops of the pews in slick bottom cowboy boots with eyes closed and hands waving in the air! No accidents, no children screaming in terror, and no cranky visitors who need to find a LDS ward.

People are really not understanding, are they? It's not like an autistic kid can just "get over it". If it's really that bad, I would just go, with or without a letter. The letter thing is ridiculous anyway.
