The promise of the Obama presidency was not merely that he’d bring Democrats back to power. It was that he’d usher in the first era of truly progressive public policy in decades. But the survival of Obamacare notwithstanding, Obama’s impending “victory” in the current standoff moves us further away from, not closer to, that goal.

It’s not just that Obama looks likely to accept the sequester cuts as the basis for future budget negotiations. It’s that while he’s been trying to reopen the government and prevent a debt default, his chances of passing any significant progressive legislation have receded. Despite overwhelming public support, gun control is dead. Comprehensive immigration reform, once considered the politically easy part of Obama’s second term agenda, looks unlikely. And the other items Obama trumpeted in this year’s state of the union address—climate change legislation, infrastructure investment, universal preschool, voting rights protections, a boost to the minimum wage—have been largely forgotten.

good article PO, i still think damage is being done to public perceptions of the gop. we will know in one year how the tea party will effect the gop. i think it will be a negative impact.

We certainly shall see. I would like to point out this particular sentence in the article - "Despite overwhelming public support, gun control is dead."

The "gun control" issue is dead because the American people don't want it. That is a huge indication of where this country stands, regardless of MSM - they stand on the side of the Constitution.

Today Obama is saying that we need to ignore the bloggers and talking heads. That is where we find freedom from the narrative of the MSM. He doesn't want us to speak our minds and share our views. The 1st Amendment is power to the people.

What has GOP accomplished?

I was a GOP precinct chairman. I talked to people, campaigning. I tried to organize. I tried to become a delegate to the county convention.

As a result of my activities in the GOP, I decided I would NEVER, N_E_V_E_R, vote 'Republican' again. No Republican will E_V_E_R get my vote, period, full stop.

I am 110 % convinced the GOP is a farce, just like the Democrat party. They mouth off what they think we all want to hear, but in the end, when all is said and done, they do the exact same thing, fundamentally, that the Democratic party does - they increase government, increase debt, increase spending, increase the police state, and enrich themselves.

The 'Tea Party' candidates that got elected to the House last go round have all but been compromised (some of them appear to have been sell-outs from the get go).

The GOP is the 'right wing socialist' party, as opposed to the Democrats which are the 'left wing socialist' party.

And MANY, M_A_N_Y republicans I knew and know feel the same way. And more and more rank and file republicans are waking up to the fact that the GOP is playing games, putting on a charade, and looking out for themselves rather than our nation and posterity.

A pox on both their houses.

As journalist Ezra Klein explains:

There are no policy concessions from the Democrats (income verification is already part of Obamacare). There are no procedural concessions from the Democrats. Just the opposite, in fact.

Democrats managed to get the budget conference they’ve been pursuing for six months. They got a CR of the length they wanted and ending before the next sequestration cuts rather than six-month CR that Sen. Susan Collins proposed. They got a debt-ceiling increase all the way into February. This is far beyond what Democrats thought possible on Sept. 30.

But the strategy Ted Cruz managed to force on the GOP was so suicidal that Democrats felt comfortable forcing Republicans to cave completely. They were so confident that they managed to reject a deal proposed by Sen. Susan Collins and supported by many Senate Democrats because it funded the government for longer than the Democratic leadership preferred. That’s a level of control over the outcome that Democrats never expected to have.

That’s right. The proposal put forth by Sen. Collins, including the repeal of the medical device tax lobbyists had wanted so badly, was rejected. Democrats got a far better deal.

The TRUTH of the matter is, all this political gamesmanship between 'their team and our team' is a bunch of baloney. It appears to me Hillary Clinton has been selected to be the next President, the GOP was designed to fail ever since Shrub's last days of glory, it's all part of a Big Plan, and YOU and I ain't in on it.
