Republican Party Favorability Sinks to Record Low

http://www.gallup.com/poll/165317/re...ecord-low.aspx
Falls 10 percentage points from September's 38%
by Andrew Dugan
This article is part of an ongoing series analyzing how the government shutdown and the debate over raising the debt ceiling are affecting Americans' views of government, government leaders, political parties, the economy, and the country in general.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- With the Republican-controlled House of Representatives engaged in a tense, government-shuttering budgetary standoff against a Democratic president and Senate, the Republican Party is now viewed favorably by 28% of Americans, down from 38% in September. This is the lowest favorable rating measured for either party since Gallup began asking this question in 1992.

Like I said and continue to say, this is making the GOP look bad. They might as well hand the keys to Congress over to the DEMs.

Re: Republican Party Favorability Sinks to Record

I think the GOP "leadership" (specifically Boehner) has done a miserable PR job. He should've been in front of the cameras every day showing the bills the House passed to stop the govt shutdown; the bills which Reid and the Democrats in the Senate have refused to vote on, and which obama says he would veto.

Instead, he's allowed the whole debate to be framed by obama, Reid and the Democrats who have been running around DC giving interviews and press conferences.

We'll see how this may or may not hurt the GOP elections in 2014. obama's approval has dropped like a rock, and the Congressional Democrat approval rating is not far from the Republicans.

63% blame Republicans
57% blame Democrats (just 6 percentage points off the Republicans)
53% blame obama (10 percentage points off Republicans)

I don't think Republicans have a lot to be worried about. Now if, for example, the Democrats and obama's numbers were lower....say in the 30s or so, and the Republicans were at 63%, then I would be worried.

And if you get the Independent voter involved, the blame is even more even.

60% are angry with Republicans
59% are angry with Democrats
58% are angry with obama

It doesnt matter. They know he isnt going to approve anything that defunds Obamacare or delays the mandate. So what do they do? They continue to pass bills that do that vary thing. We need Clinton and Newt type leadership.

No, we need Reagan and O'neil leadership. Those two showed how to compromise, even on their own pet projects (like Reagan's missile defense), to pass bills and stop shutdowns.

Yes. Compromise is needed.

Re: Republican Party Favorability Sinks to Record

Ignored by Darrmad is this:

Quote:
Self-identified Republicans are more than twice as likely to view their own party unfavorably (27%) as Democrats are to see their own party unfavorably (13%). The GOP's unfavorable rating among Republicans is up eight points from September, compared with a one-point rise in Democratic Party unfavorables among Democrats. These findings may be consistent with the widely circulated narrative that the Republican Party is internally splintered on how best to handle the budgetary negotiations.
There is a rift within the Republican Party, between the establishment and the new conservatives. As stated, more than twice as likely to be unfavorable in the polling.

Re: Republican Party Favorability Sinks to Record

Also lost in the polling is the fact as noted previously....GOP leadership has failed to frame the debate, and has allowed obama, the Democrats and msm to blame the Republicans.

Every news media, every paper, every online publication falsely narrates the shutdown as caused by the Republicans alone. They fail to mention the Republicans were the one's who passed a bill which would fully fund the govt, which was rejected by Reid and the Senate Democrats.

With the public being sold a bill of goods, it's no wonder they blame the Republicans. If I believed the media, I would too.

It goes beyond simply NOT framing the debate. The best analogy I have heard is that the Republican establishment, aka Charley Brown, is once again being told by the dems, aka Lucy, that THIS TIME she will hold the football. The repubs (establishment) give in and give in and give in and give in hoping that the MSM will finally "be nice to them" -until they end up compromising about 97% of their position while the dems compromise 3%, who of course get ALL the praise in the media for making the hard decisions. But do the likes of Boenher and McCain learn that Lucy will NOT hold the football (for the 57th time)? Of course not.

Now the GOP leadership is floating the idea of a "short term" credit hike if Obama will allow "real negotiations" to take place.

That is true.
