at least part of the housing crises was his fault
unintended consequences of trying to make housing affordable for more people

I would say the housing market was mostly the fault of democrats before and during his tenure with their fanny mae and freedy mac debacle and their inititive of giving loans to poor people who could not pay it back.

Re: How much of this is Bush's fault?
I would say none of what happened to trigger our 21st century near Depression is Obama's fault.
Some of this is GWB's fault. As a Conservative, there are things that he could have done to help the government save money that he just didn't do. There are ways he could helped the country to invest in herself that he just didn't do.
He had a Republican House and an evenly divided Senate to work with for 6 of his 8 years-- and there is hardly anything Conservative about his spending habits while he was in office.
If they wanted to do away with Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae, they definitely had the ability to do it-- but they didn't. Sure, reports surfaced by the middle of year 6 of his Presidency, and sure there are people that tried to raise awareness of a problem, but if there were ANY problems at all, they existed before year 6 of his Presidency and you can be sure that there were folks who were aware of the risks-- before year 6 of his Presidency.
However, Obama shares a portion of the blame for WHY the economy has dragged its feet in recovering.
He shares a portion of the blame with everyone in Congress-- they help in or hurt the country fiscally with their good or bad decisions.
The credit rating drop was an example of politics at its worst-- and YES Congress had a part on the whole soup sandwich that ultimately affected the whole country.
No one sends Congressmen to DC to shut down the government. We send them to make the govt more efficient and make things run smoothly.
Everyone in DC, from Obama down, at times seemed to forget why they were sent there in the first place.

I disagree. His tax cuts were meant to help the country invest in herself, and they did. Businesses grew and hired at a large rate in the first 6 years of office.
Yes he could have done something about FM/FM. but then whoa the garbage that would have followed.. "George Bush kicks thousands of poor out of their homes!!! " You know that would have been the headline.
Bushes only problem was a major mishandling of the wars. We should have been in and out in half the time for half the price tag.
I agree with your last three statements.

Re: How much of this is Bush's fault?
I think you need to step back further than Bush. Clinton started this. He threw around a "surplus" that we never really had. Started social programs that we never had the money to pay for. Everyone thought there was nothing but good times ahead and were spending like crazy, most of it was just credit, credit nobody had a budget to pay for.
The housing crisis ? Bush ? Not hardly, Clinton founded Freddie Mac and Fannie May, as well as various other programs to get people who otherwise could not afford a home into one.
It is fact by the numbers that the economy started correcting itself, (declining) the last two years of Clinton.
The Bush tax cuts would have solved it and turned the economy around. However, his mishandling of the gulf and afghan wars erased any good that would have come from it.

Re: How much of this is Bush's fault?
The economic problems had their beginning during the Clinton administration when the DOJ threatened to go after the banks for "red-lining" people when they applied for a home mortgage.
This was based on a bogus report that has since been completely debunked.
This made lending agencies desperate to racially balance their loans.
And led to the housing/economic bubble and later collapse.
All started by Democrats.
But don't try to explain this to the typical voter, they won't take the time to research or think about it.
