Al Davis died

That's the news I read when I opened my browser. It's sad that he died, but I know for a fact many Raider fans will see this as good news

Apostolic is defined on AFF as:

  1. There is One God. This one God reveals Himself distinctly as Father, Son and Holy Ghost.
  2. The Son is God himself in a human form or "God manifested in the flesh" (1Tim 3:16)
  3. Every sinner must repent of their sins.
  4. That Jesus name baptism is the only biblical mode of water baptism.
  5. That the Holy Ghost is for today and is received by faith with the initial evidence of speaking in tongues.
  6. The saint will go on to strive to live a holy life, pleasing to God.

Re: Al Davis died

He was the greatest foe the Raiders had. He cut so many coaches out over the years trying to strong arm them and it was not a good thing. He also set or allowed a certain culture there in Oakland. Maybe it will be a lasting one or a better one will be created.

The way he hung onto that franchise and dragged it through each of his temper tantrums is reminiscent of the way many UPC and other "Apostolic" pastors handle their churches.

The losing records come to mind as well. The key here is that in looking for good leadership, look for people who are inspired by things greater than themselves. Otherwise, when the "old man" goes crazy and senile, all of your hopes, dreams and hard work end up being lost as well.

Al Davis was successful, when he was successful, because he had great talent and innovated. However, when times changed, he couldn't see beyond himself and adapt. Instead, he dragged an outmoded method into a new era. There was never anything about the Raiders that was "bigger" than Al Davis.

Reminds me so much of my own UPC experience. There was never anything "bigger" than the old man and his temper tantrums and bizarre ideology. Even after failing time and time again, he'd come right back and do the same old tired publicity stunts over and over again - hurting everyone around him, particularly his family. He didn't have the capacity to learn and grow because he believed that "God" had already revealed to him everything there was to know when he was young.

R.I.P. Al Davis... and the generation that's joining you in the grave.
