I'm sitting here reading a textbook and stumbled across this, "God used a series of ten plagues to prove he was in control of the cosmic order, not the Egyptian god-king, pharaoh."
In another book, the author had linked each plague to an Egyptian god or goddess. Water to blood vs Osiris, frogs vs Hekt, lice vs Seb, flies vs Kephera', cattle vs Apis and Harthor, boils vs Typhon, hail vs Serapis, locusts vs Serapis, darkness vs Ra, death vs Ptah.
Is it possible that the plagues were not a sort of "let my people go or else..." but a demonstration of the far more powerful God of Israel to the Egyptians, a means of saying "I really am more powerful than these other gods, worship Me"?

God did it for us. Out of sheer generosity he put us in right standing with himself. A pure gift. He got us out of the mess we're in and restored us to where he always wanted us to be. And he did it by means of Jesus Christ. ~Romans 3:24 from The Message

The Bible says as much. Nothing about matching up plagues to specific Egyptian gods (which is interesting, but smacks of speculation, IMO), but the main reasons for the plagues are given in Exodus 9:15-16.
15 For now I will stretch out my hand, that I may smite thee and thy people with pestilence; and thou shalt be cut off from the earth.
16 And in very deed for this cause have I raised thee up, for to shew in thee my power; and that my name may be declared throughout all the earth.

Exactly! And, if they do match up with the gods, then all the more clarification that God was bigger than the god they worshipped.

Well yeah...speculation....college professors are good at that. I thought it was interesting when I read that the first time, but after I read this today and kind of realized that maybe it's not how I've been taught my whole life......
