I have been a casual watcher in the past. Generally I have watched reruns when nothing else was on or as background noise.
Having been at sea in the Navy, I certainly understand the Ocean and what these guys go thru. What they do is unbelieveable. I have seen enough episodes to get a sense of the main players on the ships and I have huge respect for the work they do.
About a month ago, I caught a new episode and got a since that something was going terribly wrong. This is a reality show that has more real reality than any other show out there. All I can say is wow.

Alaskan crabs in the North Pacific and Bering Sea area. Due to the crabs spawning behavior, the area is off limits for some parts of the year - usually the calmer seasons. Then, when the seas start to pick up, the catching season kicks in and it's a mad rush to harvest as much as they can before the seas are completely out of control.
I haven't seen the show, but I've known guys who went up there to try their hand at this. The money is huge - for a working stiff. But the water is such that you'd last about 30 seconds overboard if you didn't have a full survival suit on.
One of the Captains had what they think is a stroke. One of the crew found him face down in his quarters. He was airlifted to a hospital in either Anchorage or Fairbanks, I can't remember which. I watch it frequently.

It was a major stroke. Captian Phil.
As of the episode last night, he is very near death and had a 12 hour operation to relieve pressure on his brain.
He actually passed away in Feb. of this year. if you watch the "After the Catch" show that follows, they talk about it.
Phil had two sons who work on the ship, the younger one was found to be a drug addict on the episode Phil had the stroke. very sad deal.

I did not get to watch the "After the Catch", and didn't know he had passed away. Yeah, It did seem that the younger son had some kind of problem, I did miss some of that episode as well.
I watch Ice Road Truckers as well. I like shows about Alaska.

Yeah it sure did, I imagine many of those men have problems, seems odd that Phil didn't know his son was using.

I was so bummed to hear of Capt. Phil's death. Keith and I watch the show frequently-
I we missed 'after the catch' since we already knew he died.
I did not realize that he had recently discovered that his son was an addict before his stroke- almost sounds like it could have been the contributing factor.

He caught the boy in his stateroom on the return trip back to Dutch Harbor. The kid was stealing his pain pills.
Phil called him out, told him he was a theif and a liar and he didnt want to see him again.
The kid told him he was an adict. that evening (or the next day) Phil was found in his state room face down.
It seems there was some degree of reconscilliation however it was gut wrenching to watch the whole thing unfold.
