I am Holier than God ...

That is essentially the position of those that stand by a non-existent extrabiblical NT prohibition against ornamental jewelry.

He inspired these words comparing His righteousness to what some erroneously deem as sin and immodesty.
Quote:
I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decketh himself with ornaments, and as a bride adorneth herself with her jewels.
Would He compare His righteousness to fornication? Adultery? A murder weapon? A pagan idol?

Your standards and identity are holier than the Almighty's?

If so, you don't have the whole Truth.

He is our Holiness.

Re: I am Holier than God ...

I doubt anyone in their right mind thinks they are "holier than God". Some folks might just feel that if they eschew certain things with a set of ridged standards it will help them become as holy as God would like them to be.

So in the eschewing with their man-made, extrabiblical standards they become as holy and righteous as God would like them to be?

Whew ... That has got to be tiring!!!! ... The Pharisees had over 2,000 similar fences for the Law as well.

Have you ever read the Mishnah?

Do you think that principals behind what might be considered extra-biblical standards are valid and needful?

Do you agree, for example, that one might not see it as sin for a woman to wear pants, yet the underlying principal of sexual distinction and perhaps modesty, for said standard, is biblical and ought to be taught as such?

Or even if a woman does not see cutting her hair as a sin, wouldn't the principles of gender difference, submitting to the husband, and long hair being glorious possibly make a woman keep her hair long?

I've always heard it said that before you take a fence down you should understand why it was built in the first place.

Re: I am Holier than God ...

First let me preface and say I hold to a standard of not wearing jewelry. But I think you are right in many senses. There is more scripture for bridal adornment than there is for no 'wedding ring' for example. This scripture seems to discuss bridal jewelry in particular.

I think the whole point of the scripture about not being adorned with gold pearls and costly array, is really saying "Be adorned with GOOD WORKS". Let your outward appearance, or what people see... let it be your good works.

That said, it does say:

1Ti 2:9-10
not with ... gold, or pearls, or costly array.
But .... with good works.

So, someone who says I do not wear jewelry because it says so in the bible are also right. I do not think they are trying to be holier than God. They are trying to please him.

I love holiness, but I don't want it to come from doctrines of man. And more so, I don't want to demand my liberties at the expense of condemning and offending my brother.
