I just read a study on AOL that 1 in 7 U.S. adult is illiterate. Is it just me or is that a staggeringly high number? I'm afraid to even go and see how that compares to other nations. How is that even possible?

And 5 out of every 4 people don't understand statistics.
( Sorry!)

I haven't seen the study, but I suppose they define "illiterate" as some minimum level, which is somewhere higher than absolute inability to read anything. A certain grade level, I'd guess. Wouldn't surprise me if 1/7 of adults have trouble reading, say, Stephen Hawking and comprehend much of it.

I'd have to check into it, but I'm thinking they are figuring in the illegals. I thought I read that somewhere.

But - NO, Stew, that doesn't surprise me at all.
I'm not surprised by this statistic, either.
I'm appalled when I read over some of the resumes I receive, from alleged college graduates!
Seems that mediocrity is the new standard of excellence.

I agree.

It's not surprising at all. We lowered the bar for athletes and a few others. And this is the result.
