Bro. Benson Died

Bro. Benson, who was the UPC Tennessee District Superintendent for many years, died this morning. He was probably in his nineties, or close to that. I haven't seen him for a while. He was a funny guy; looked like a cross between George Burns and Mr. Magoo. He was our leader the whole time we were in UPC in Tennessee. I don't know anything about his arrangements. Maybe Haddock will hear something and post it here.

Mom just called and told me. Bro. Jackie Wilkerson had contacted her. I do not know arrangements. I would say Bro. Benson was WELL up in his nineties. He was a funny man. He and his wife visited in my home when I was growing up many, many times. Special folks. "Strike up the band...another soldier's coming home".

I just heard his funeral will be Monday at Bro. Becton's church in Nashville. I'm not sure if we'll make it or not, but I'm sure Bro. Luther will (one of our staff pastors). I think he was 93.

93 sounds right. I was thinking he and my grandaddy were right at the same age and my gradaddy would have been 93 this past July.

Visitation tomorrow afternoon/evening at Goodlettsville UPC. Funeral on Monday at Ron Becton's church (W. Nashville). I'm not sure of the time, but I think maybe 1 pm. I think Eddie is going Monday with Bro. Luther.

And yes, I would say he was more of the one-stepper persuasion, although he wasn't vocal with it like some of his predecessors. He would have been trained around Bro. Gurley and Bro. W.M. Greer and others.

Eddie went to the funeral on Monday. He got to see a lot of people he hadn't seen in a long time, especially preachers from our past. The funeral was long and had several speakers, from what I understood. They said the service was really sweet. Bro. Hardwick did the graveside service, which kind of surprised me.
