I was taking trash out and I stepped in a spot that the dirt under my feet sank with me. It was the strangest thing.
It went down 6/8 inches. Then I noticed what at first I thought was anthills, but no ants.
The holes are close together and the dirt underneath them is very loose. When you walk on it you can feel it give ....It is in an area of about 6 or 8 foot square.

My grandmother told me a little trick years ago to get rid of those things.
She would take Juicy Fruit stick gum and break each stick into three pieces. Then she would roll up the small pieces and put it down into the "runs" in the yard. She said you must wear gloves to do this, or they will pick up the human scent on the gum-- and won't touch the gum. Anyway, they will eat the gum-- and it will block their intestines and kill them. She said that other animals will not use the same tunnels made by previous occupants, that they will all make their own.
We haven't had those little critters in our yard in several years now.... so the gum trick must work.
