AP Shock Poll - McCain & Obama Even

WASHINGTON (AP) - An Associated Press-GfK poll shows the presidential race tightened after the final debate, with John McCain gaining among whites and people earning less than $50,000. Two weeks before the election, McCain and Barack Obama are essentially running even among likely voters.
The poll put Obama at 44 percent and McCain at 43 percent among those voters who are considered likely to vote on Nov. 4. The survey supports what some Republicans and Democrats privately have said in recent days: that the race has narrowed as Republicans drift home to their party. McCain's "Joe the plumber" analogy also seemed to strike a chord.

The race is still volatile. Three weeks ago, an AP-GfK survey found that Obama had a seven-point lead over McCain

Re: AP Shock Poll - McCain & Obama Even

I fully expect the race to tighten to within 5% before election day. Right now, based on all the polling I've seen, I'd say it's a 6-8% advantage for Obama entering these last two weeks. I don't believe that Obama can hang on to these supposed 8%-12% leads some are alluding to currently. I think the country is much more evenly divided on the issues and candidates than that.

I'd love to see the AP's criteria going into that poll because it's completely out of line with most every other poll out right now. There's still a widegap of margins in the popular vote polls, but none have it a virtual tie. The McCain campaign doesn't even believe it's quite that close yet.

P.S. I didn't see the thread below. Maybe an admin can merge threads for us.

..... just as journalists nationwide were starting to write their landslide stories, in comes this week's AP poll ... with McCain behind by just one point. That might as well be a tie. If you factor in the margin of error, then McCain could actually be ahead.
