I was listening to our local morning talk radio show as I dropped the kids off at school this morning & the hot button issue was "Affirmative Action" in politics.
We are scheduled for a Provincial election in May 2009 & there are two main political parties at play the Liberals (who are anything but they are more Conservative) and the NDP New Democratic Party a real "Lefty" party.
They announced that Corky Evans who holds the seat in the Rocky Mountains and is retiring announced that they will only look at Woman, Disabled, Native, Visible Minority, Gay, or Trans Gendered!!
It is just the fact that they will appoint Candidates for election based on Affirmative Action and not on thier qualities as a Candidate.
Welcome to America. Land of the AA.

He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God? Micah 6:8 KJV
Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. 1 John 3:2 KJV

doesnt sound like democracy to me.
now as it realates to Affermitive Action, well this is an area of real conflict for me.
I dont think a person ought to be awarded a job or admission to a school based on race. it should always be based on qualification.
but when two candidates have the same qualifications, there is value in that organization insuring that their workers/students etc reflect the community they reside in.
Racism is a barrier that remains in place in American society and there needs to be a mechinism in place to work to remove it.
I dont like quota systems. I dont like giving preferential treatment to less qualified candidates, but when Affirmitive Action deals with situations where qualified minority candidates are routinely passed over for majority candidates, then I think there is a place for it.
In the case you are talking about, it clearly is a form of democracy that wouldnt fly in America.

Doesn't fly here either judging from the outcry on the callers phoning into the morning show on the Radio.
Even political commentators were saying it is a flawed process!

So is this being done by the government or by one or both of the parties?

In Grutter v. Bollinger Sandra Day O'Connor said this.
"Race-conscious admissions policies must be limited in time. The Court takes the Law School at its word that it would like nothing better than to find a race-neutral admissions formula and will terminate its use of racial preferences as soon as practicable. The Court expects that 25 years from now, the use of racial preferences will no longer be necessary to further the interest approved today."
It seems affirmative action has an expiration date here in America.

Uh-oh. Some people better get busy. When is the deadline?
